Salmonella infantis ulcerative keratitis in a dog

This manuscript describes a previously unreported clinical case of Salmonella enterica serovar infantis associated with ulcerative keratitis in a dog. Local immunosuppression of the corneal surface likely contributed to this opportunistic infection. Antimicrobial therapy with topical ofloxacin, tobramycin, and systemic enrofloxacin was successful in resolving the infection.

Surgical management of a solitary metastatic ovarian adenocarcinoma with colonic origin presenting as gigantic bilateral ovarian masses

  • First Published: 12 September 2022

The key clinical message, in this case, is that large, bilateral masses in the absence of ascites are suggestive for an extragonadal origin for which one of the primary sources is GI, so endoscopy and colonoscopy should be carried out for these patients (for gastric and colonic cancers). Resecting the primary tumor with metastasis is controversial, and not currently enough data are available. Our assumption is that we have to rule out the secondary sites of metastasis and peritoneal seeding, for which palliative chemotherapy and ostomy diversion for obstructive cases is the only option. In cases with no secondary site of metastasis surgery is considered an option, but the risk of metachronous metastasis is high, and the prognosis is poor.

First case of sunflower pattern calcific deposits and posterior capsular opacification on a pseudophakos

Calcification of intraocular lens is uncommon and has been reported after cataract surgery, in scleral buckles, and implants. Coexistence with capsular opacification in a typical pattern in the same eye is an extremely rare phenomenon.

Intraabdominal guidewire-related perforation of the esophagus: An uncommon complication of esophageal bougienage treated by intraprocedural clip closure

Bougienage-associated esophageal perforation is rare. Guidewire-related perforation distant from the stricture site remains an even more uncommon mechanism. Post-procedure endoscopy remains instrumental to detect perforation and provide closure.

A man with panda eyes after a fall

Periorbital ecchymosis, known as Panda or Raccoon eyes, is seen when blood pools in subcutaneous periorbital tissues. Progress of pulmonary hypertension and high manganese levels through congenital portosystemic shunt closure

A 6-year-old girl with congenital portosystemic shunt presented with abnormal manganese levels and improving pulmonary hypertension even 1 year after shunt vascular ligation. As the progress after portal vein blood flow recovery varies among individuals, long-term follow-up of patients with congenital portosystemic shunt is needed.

Post-traumatic missing talus: Staged allograft interposition and fusion. Should we fuse the “talo-navicular” joint?

Complete talar dislocation—extrusion is an uncommon sequela of high-energy trauma. When the talus is unavailable for reimplantation, a staged treatment plan with the use (a) of an antibiotic cement spacer, followed by (b) tibiotalocalcaneal fusion with bone allograft interposition, may ensure a good clinical outcome.

A rare case of melanoma erysipeloides

Carcinoma erysipeloides remains rare form of cutaneous metastasis that presents as an erythematous, well-demarcated patch or plaque that resembles erysipelas. It is most frequently associated with carcinoma of the breast, but has been reported with other primary tumors, including lung and colon, accounting for 4% of skin metastases.
