In Memoriam: Mihai Gheorghiade

Mihai Gheorghiade sadly passed away on 28 August 2017. His contributions to the understanding of heart failure and improving patients’ symptoms and outcomes endures and will be forever acknowledged. He was also extremely active with HFA and our journal both as an enthusiastic researcher and organizer and as an Author, a Reviewer and an Editor. In Memoriam: Henry Krum

Henry Krum left us in the last days of November 2015. Throughout his life, he made major contributions to science and, namely, to the understanding and treatment of heart failure. One demonstration of this is the remarkable number of articles published in our journal, the European Journal of Heart Failure. This virtual issue is a selection from the articles that he authored that were published in our journal; they allow us to retrace some of the major steps in our knowledge about heart failure. Scientific contributions allow investigators to survive their material life through the persistent legacy of their work, and it is my wish that this will be a small proof of how much Henry left to us.

Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF)

Introduction

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for up to half of contemporary diagnoses of heart failure and is associated with similar adverse short- and long-term outcomes to heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Notwithstanding, its diagnosis is still partially unsettled and no specific treatment has been shown as effective, yet. HFpEF has therefore drawn the attention of many outstanding researchers. This virtual issue collects and highlights some of the most recent articles published in this field by our journal.

Top cited articles: Celebrating 5 years as Editor-in-Chief of EJHF
I took over as Editor-in-Chief of EJHF on 1 January 2010, and from the beginning, ‘doing’ the Journal in Groningen was a big source of inspiration and we enjoyed it enormously. I was very fortunate to be able to assign Professor Adriaan Voors and Professor Wiek van Gilst as Deputy Editors, and 15 Associate Editors from our department (14 in Cardiology and 1 in CardioThoracic Surgery) who were all dedicated to heart failure (more details are in the Editorial of the December 2014 issue of the Journal).
During our time on the Journal, we were privileged to see some excellent submissions from around the world that have driven forward our understanding of heart failure, and improved its treatment, so we are very proud to share with you now the most cited works from the 5 years of our tenure.

Sleep Apnoea / Sleep-disordered Breathing and Heart Failure

Papers selected by Professor Dr Dirk J van Veldhuisen

Introduction

Sleep apnoea (or sleep-disordered breathing), and in particular central sleep apnoea (CSA), is one of the more recent additions to the list of significant co-morbidities of heart failure; it is ‘the new kid on the block’. Prevalence levels of up to 60% have been reported in studies of patients with heart failure, and CSA has also been associated with increased mortality in some studies, perhaps as much as doubling the mortality risk of patients with heart failure.

To date, no interventional study has been able to improve outcome in these patients but a few studies are currently underway, the results of which are awaited with interest. We present here a collection of articles from EJHF spanning the prognostic impact, associations with other symptoms, and treatment of sleep apnoea in heart failure patients.
