Our Commitment for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I)
The opportunity for a successful career in science is not equal for everyone and some researchers face more obstacles than others. Many in the chemistry community experience bias, discrimination, and harassment based on their identity. This occurs at every career level and often impedes career advancement and scientific achievement. Identities affected by bias, discrimination, and harassment include age, race, ethnicity, nationality, sex, gender identity, romantic and sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity, socioeconomic background, religion, belief, civil status, and others. Bias and discrimination are complex and unique to each individual, in particular when multiple identities combine in terms of intersectionality.
The Angewandte Chemie team condemns all forms of discrimination and harassment. We will not tolerate such behavior from our authors, reviewers, and team members.
We value diversity in our research communities and are convinced of its contribution to scientific excellence and the positive development of the chemical sciences. It is our responsibility to actively oppose inequity and discrimination, and to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion where we can. We are aware that unconscious bias exists in chemistry as a whole, including publishing, and will continue to improve ourselves in identifying bias and counteracting it. We will listen to the community, educate ourselves, and advocate for those who are marginalized and/or discriminated against.

Actions Taken So Far
- The International Advisory Board (IAB) was redefined to better reflect the diversity of the chemistry community. This includes diversity in subject expertise, career stage, and geographical location, as well as members from under-represented groups and DE&I advocates.
- A Scientific Advisory Committee consisting of ten academic Advisory Editors was set up. They support our team of professional editors in decision-making and editorial strategy by providing a broad range of perspectives.
- Introducing... author profiles were launched to highlight first-time corresponding authors and thereby support early-career researchers.
- The article types Scientific Perspective and Viewpoint Article were launched as a platform for constructive opinion-based contributions on scientific best practices and topics relevant to the culture of the chemistry community, respectively.
- A transparent Appeals Policy was introduced to ensure that all appeals against editorial decisions are treated fairly.
- Members of our team were instrumental in the development of Wiley's inclusive author name change policy, which was introduced at our journal in late 2020.
- Revised guidelines for Cover Pictures and Table of Contents Graphics and Language forbid discriminatory and stereotyping content.
- Virtual symposia on Gender in Academia and Publishing and An African Perspective on Diversity in Science were hosted as contributions to the IUPAC Global Women's Breakfast.
