The underestimated role of mitochondria in vitiligo: From oxidative stress to inflammation and cell death

Morphologically and functionally altered mitochondria may disrupt the redox balance, trigger inflammatory responses and cause various forms of melanocyte death, all of which jointly contribute to the onset and progression of vitiligo. The impairment of Nrf2 pathways in vitiligo is closely associated with mitochondria damage, rendering both mitochondria and Nrf2 promising targets in vitiligo treatment.

Lesional skin of seborrheic dermatitis patients is characterized by skin barrier dysfunction and correlating alterations in the stratum corneum ceramide composition

A multimodal characterization of seborrheic dermatitis established inflammation at lesional sites which were further defined by increased Staphylococcus abundances, barrier dysfunction and underlying changes in the ceramide profile that correlate to barrier function compared to non-lesional skin. However, Malassezia abundances and Malassezia species distribution were comparable to non-lesional skin.

Recent advances in delivery of transdermal nutrients: A review

Transdermal delivery has several advantages over traditional administration strategies, with improved bioavailability of nutrients. Nutrients penetrate through lipid layers of the stratum corneum via free volume diffusion. Chemical permeation enhancers, carriers and physical techniques can increase the transdermal absorption of nutrients, especially in combination with enhancers.

Hot spots for clinical signs of disease activity in vitiligo

Clinical signs of disease activity in vitiligo (confetti-like depigmentation, Koebner phenomenon, hypochromic areas/borders) can be found in specific body areas (hot spots). This knowledge can enhance and simplify the clinical detection of the signs.

Protein therapeutics as an emerging strategy to deal with skin cancer: A short review

Proteins are well-explored area in the field of targeted therapies for cancer treatment due to several advantages over other therapies. They have immunomodulatory properties, reduce toxicity and enhanced efficacy against skin cancer cells. The main challenge faced for target delivery of such proteins includes bio-barriers and their suitability with the target cell for inducing apoptosis which is met by bioengineering. The protein interacts in tumour micro-environment and modulates the secretion of respective cells which eventually leads to killing of cancer cells.

Compromised melanocyte survival due to decreased suppression of CD4+ & CD8+ resident memory T cells by impaired TRM-regulatory T cells in generalized vitiligo patients

Increased numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ TRM cells were found in GV patients' skin. Decreased and impaired TRM-Tregs and antigen-specific Tregs were unable to suppress CD4+ & CD8+ TRM cytotoxic function and their proliferation.

Redefine photoprotection: Sun protection beyond sunburn

The application of a sunscreen with SPF100 protects the skin significantly better against skin damage by altering the inflammation marker IL-18, cell vitality, cis-UCA levels and DNA damage compared to SPF30 and SPF50+ by up to 40%.

Enzymes for dermatological use

Skin health and skin ageing are important concerns since internal and external stressors such as sunlight and pollution can damage skin integrity and lead to disorders. Topically applied enzymes have been investigated to treat the effects of stressors, including antioxidant enzymes, proteases and repairing enzymes.
