Plankton Ecology in the Gulf of Naples

This Special Issue contains the results of the recent ecological investigations conducted in the Gulf of Naples, fueled by almost 40 years of observations at the Long-Term Ecological Research site MareChiara (LTER-MC). This issue is planned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the SZN foundation. The published contributions span from phytoplankton to zooplankton and their changes under changing environmental conditions. The contributions include the results of either field or laboratory investigations, based on classical methods and/or using advanced molecular technologies. With this collection, we gather the most updated knowledge on the diversity and functions of the plankton of the Gulf of Naples, shedding light on general aspects that go far beyond the local scale and highlighting the pivotal role of LTER sites as testbeds for answering fundamental and yet unsolved ecological questions.
