Liquid-based cytology and immunocytochemistry in the evaluation of a vault lesion in a postmenopausal woman

Liquid-based cytology and immunocytochemistry in the evaluation of a vault lesion in a postmenopausal woman

Cytological features of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the cervix in a liquid-based preparation from a vault lesion.

Parasitic larvae in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in a non-immunocompromised patient

Parasitic larvae in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in a non-immunocompromised patient

Strongyloides stercoralis is responsible for a significant human parasitic infection known as strongyloidiasis. In addition, pulmonary strongyloidiasis is one of the most critical signs of disseminated strongyloidiasis. In this instance, S. stercoralis was unexpectedly discovered in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

Interventional cytopathologist can successfully combine ultrasonographical and microscopic skills to narrow the differential diagnosis in fine needle aspiration of neck paraganglioma

The interventional cytopathologist can successfully refine the differential diagnosis of a neck mass by combining ultrasonographical and morphological skills as shown in this case of head and neck paraganglioma, which was suspected thanks to ultrasound features and rapid-on site evaluation and further confirmed by immunocytochemistry on cell block and by the subsequent histologic evaluation.

Morphology quiz: Bronchial washing cytology from flexible bronchoscopy

The aim of this observation is to make cytologists aware of the identification of melanoma cells in bronchial washings from an endobronchial metastasis of malignant melanoma. CT scan and flexible bronchoscopy images are provided and differential diagnosis and additional analyses (molecular biology) are mentioned and discussed.

Now you see me, now you don't: Isolated central nervous system recurrence of CD19-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma following CD19-directed CAR T-cell treatment

Now you see me, now you don't: Isolated central nervous system recurrence of CD19-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma following CD19-directed CAR T-cell treatment

The authors discuss a case of CD19-negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with central nervous system relapse following CD19-directed CAR T-cell treatment. Absence of CD19 expression by the tumour cells presented a challenge for flow cytometry evaluation.

An unusual case of tongue swelling

FNAC from tongue is not rare and one has to be aware of the different benign and malignant lesions that can be encountered in this region. Careful observation of gross morphology along with cellular & background details will clinch the correct diagnosis.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a gastric mass—A riddle wrapped up in an enigma

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a recognised neoplasm which can be diffuse or can rarely present as a localised mass. Cytological diagnosis is a challenge and three morphological subtypes—epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic—are recognised. Rarely MM can present as a gastric mass with diffuse peritoneal spread and ascites, posing a diagnostic dilemma. Cell block and immunohistochemical stains are critical for establishing the diagnosis by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a space-occupying lesion in the liver

The fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathology of a space-occupying lesion in the liver.

Neither Russell nor Magenta bodies: A cytological dilemma in breast fine needle aspiration cytology

Neither Russell nor Magenta bodies: A cytological dilemma in breast fine needle aspiration cytology

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a rare heterogeneous group of breast epithelial tumours showing predominant NE differentiation. NENs of the breast account for less than 1% of all NENs. The index case calls for recognition of these tumours using morphology adjunct with ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry on FNA cell blocks.

When nasal cytology detects acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: New diagnostical implications

Nasal cytology is a diagnostic tool that evaluates the normal and pathological aspects of the nasal mucosa, by identifying and counting the cell types and their morphology. Since the cytological characteristics of the infiltrating inflammatory cells could reflect any cytopathological alterations of the blood circulating cells, it is not surprising that pathological findings of patients affected by oncohaematological diseases could also be found in nasal cytology. Therefore, this diagnostic tool could be applied to other branches of medicine including haematology.

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a space-occupying lesion in the lung

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a space-occupying lesion in the lung

This case discussion describes the fine needle aspiration cytology of a lung lesion with frequent intranuclear inclusions and grooves and outlines how a robust final diagnosis can be made.

Enigma portal case: Pleural effusion

This is a rare cytopathological case of epithelioid sarcoma.

Enigma portal case: Cytological diagnosis of vesicouterine fistula

Vesicouterine fistulae (VUF) are uncommonly occurring pathological passages between the bladder and uterus, and usually occur incidental to cesarean sections. This submission presents a case of VUF that was uniquely diagnosed via immunohistochemical analysis, in contrast to traditional methods of diagnosis, including via cystoscopy or via filling the bladder with dye.

Unusual uterine cervical polypoid mass presenting during pregnancy

Unusual uterine cervical polypoid mass presenting during pregnancy

The authors encountered a case of uterine cervical adenosarcoma with sarcomatous overgrowth during pregnancy. Cytological images of atypical stromal cells in sarcoma components were obtained in this case.

Cytomorphology of an uncommon cutaneous tumour

The article describes the cytomorphology of an uncommon skin adnexal tumour. Correlation of the features with histopathological features is provided and the differential diagnoses are discussed.

Cytology of primary nocardiosis of the lymph node: A rare report

Cytology of primary nocardiosis of the lymph node: A rare report

Primary nocardiosis of the lymph node is a rare presentation even in an immunocompromised individual, with few case reports in the literature. In addition, Nocardia farcinica as observed in our case, is rarely documented, making it an interesting report. This paper clearly illustrates the subtle morphological clues that can be used to diagnose nocardial infection.

A case of angiosarcoma metastasis to pleural effusion

This article describes the cytological morphology of angiosarcoma in a pleural effusion with immunocytochemistry applied to smears to help in the diagnosis of the case.
