Demographic and socioeconomic determinants of missing labs and imaging for otolaryngologic clinical visits
- First Published: 09 September 2024

With prior studies noting the notable effects of socioeconomic status and demographic factors on care in specialty clinics, we set out to determine the accessory effect of these factors on patient appointment preparedness in an otolaryngologic clinic. This study specifically examines these factors in regard to patient arrival with appropriate labs and imaging, as these are crucial in lead time and providing appropriate care for the patient. Our study identified follow-up versus initial appointment, zip code, age, sex, and marital status to be significant factors influencing patient preparedness.
Prevalence of self-reported voice and swallowing complaints in an outpatient geriatric population
- First Published: 09 September 2024

This article sought to evaluate the prevalence of dysphonia and dysphagia in a non-otolaryngology population seeking care at our geriatrics clinic. The design of this study is retrospective and cross-sectional survey. We used validated questionnaires (EAT-10, VHI-10, and PILL-5) to assess dysphonia, dysphagia and pill-dysphagia in a geriatric treatment seeking population at our academic center.
Stimulation conditions leading to electrical vestibular co-stimulation in cochlear implant users
- First Published: 09 September 2024

The study investigated electrical vestibular co-stimulation by recording of e-cVEMPs and e-oVEMPs to variations of ground path and stimulation electrode as well as modifications of stimulus frequency and number of pulses. The results showed that vestibular co-stimulation occurred in 43% of cases and is more likely in patients with high stimulation levels and for monopolar stimulation of basal electrode contacts. Some patients showed e-VEMP thresholds close to or below the electric hearing threshold level, which implies that vestibular co-stimulation can occur in daily CI use with clinical maps.
A MAUDE database analysis on the new generation of active bone conduction hearing implants
- First Published: 28 September 2024

The study analyzed adverse events reported to the FDA MAUDE database for patients with novel active bone conduction hearing implants. Data was collected concerning device malfunctions, patient injuries, factors triggering these incidents, and the subsequent actions taken. The findings highlight common complications with new active BCIs, but the authors advise caution in interpretation due to the limitations of the MAUDE database data.
Search for medical information for chronic rhinosinusitis through an artificial intelligence ChatBot
- First Published: 09 September 2024

This study evaluates the capability of ChatGPT—an artificial intelligence chatbot—to provide accurate and readable information on chronic rhinosinusitis, comparing its responses against established medical guidelines. Findings reveal that while responses align generally with the literature; readability analyses the highlight areas of complexity that may challenge the patient understanding. The study underscores ChatGPT's potential in enhancing healthcare communication, emphasizing the need for accuracy, and readability adjustments to cater to diverse educational backgrounds.

Primary site surgical resection in cM1 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma
- First Published: 14 September 2024

This study aims to investigate primary site surgical resection and overall survival in clinically distantly metastatic oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. Despite the high rate of positive surgical margins, surgical resection + adjuvant chemoradiotherapy was associated with higher overall survival than chemotherapy alone, chemoradiotherapy, or surgical resection + adjuvant chemotherapy. Definitive local therapy may benefit select patients with clinically distantly metastatic oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma.
Revisiting the etiology and clinical characteristics of hemorrhagic polyps of the vocal fold
- First Published: 20 September 2024

We present one of the largest cohorts of patients (n = 111) managed with hemorrhagic polyps. We revisit the etiology of the condition and explore how this can affect the clinical presentation. In addition, we describe the clinical characteristics, associated laryngostroboscopic findings, and outcomes with different treatments performed.

Outcomes of heliox use in children with respiratory compromise: A 10-year single institution experience
- First Published: 26 September 2024

Heliox has been used as temporizing agent for children with upper airway obstruction despite lack of consensus. Our retrospective single-institution experience suggests that heliox may be used as a temporizing agent in children with upper airway obstruction. The effectiveness of heliox use for more than 47 h in children, especially if other comorbidities are present, should be reconsidered.

Outpatient management of pediatric epistaxis: A cost analysis and clinical model
- First Published: 08 October 2024

Pediatric epistaxis is a common, often non-operative condition seen by Otolaryngologists that is associated with a direct healthcare burden. We survey our own clinical management algorithm and describe a clinical model that can optimize care coordination with primary care and advanced practice providers while, lower healthcare costs, and improve patient care.

Immunocytochemistry assessment of vocal fold regeneration after cell-based implant in rabbits
- First Published: 09 October 2024

Cell-based outer vocal fold replacement (COVR) using human adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) in fibrin was investigated in rabbits. Immunocytochemistry revealed that implanted human ASC persist in rabbit vocal folds, with some expressing CD31, an endothelial marker, whereas smooth muscle actin (SMA), a marker of myofibroblast phenotype, was present in all sections regardless of treatment and was not identified in hASC.

Impact of implementing stricter criteria for blood transfusion in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing free tissue transfer
- First Published: 18 October 2024

In this retrospective cohort study that included 346 HNC patients undergoing free tissue transfer, stricter transfusion criteria with threshold hematocrit of 21% was associated with a statistically significant improvement of OS, RFS, and complication rates with no negative impact on free flap survival. The increased tendency to transfuse free flap patients in order to maintain a threshold hematocrit may have a detrimental impact on survival and wound infections.
3D reconstruction of vocal fold dynamics with laser high-speed videoendoscopy in children
- First Published: 23 October 2024

This is the first study to evaluate vocal fold motion in 3D in children using custom developed laser endoscopy. The study illustrates the importance of evaluating the vertical motion in children. The findings also underscore the need to explore the 3D dynamics of the closing phase to distinguish vibratory motion between children and adults and emphasize the significance of studying posterior motion in children with vocal nodules during the opening phase.
Surgical resection and overall survival in cT4b sinonasal non-squamous cell carcinoma
- First Published: 23 October 2024

Our study investigates the survival benefit of surgical resection in cT4b sinonasal non-squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Surgical resection + additional therapy was associated with higher overall survival than definitive radiotherapy/chemoradiotherapy in cT4b sinonasal non-SCC. Surgical resection may benefit select patients with cT4b sinonasal non-SCC.

Aspergillus otitis externa: A retrospective study of predisposing factors, treatment, and complications
- First Published: 25 October 2024
Aspergillus otitis externa may lead to a wide range of frequent and rare complications, including tympanic membrane perforations, otitis media, mastoiditis, permanent hearing loss, and cranial nerve palsies. Aspergillus niger causes most otitis media and tympanic membrane perforations, whereas A. flavus, A. fumigatus, and immunocompromising states are predispoding factors for mastoiditis. Careful local treatment is efficient in most cases but surgery and systemic antifungals are needed in profound infections.
