In Appreciation of Jan Gratama

In Appreciation of Jan Gratama

Jan Gratama worked tirelessly in leadership roles within the Clinical Cytometry Journal for over 20 years serving as Associate Editor for European Affairs and later as Deputy Editor. Jan’s strong support through recruitment of articles, review articles and management of aspects of article reviews were key to the quality and advancement of our Clinical Cytometry  Journal. But his role was far more important to the Journal and the associated Societies ICCS and ESCCA than just his superb editorial skills. Politics is always a tricky, and sometimes difficult arena but not with Jan. He was always an excellent arbitrator, bringing sides together and promoting collaboration. There was no hidden agenda, he was always up front with the issues, honest with all, and always did the right thing for all sides involved. Thus, Jan played a key role in helping to bring both the American and European centered societies closer together. This strengthened not only the Journal, as Clinical Cytometry moved to being the primary publication arm of the two societies, but also strengthened the individual Societies.

During Jan’s tenure, he worked under two Editor in Chiefs’, initially with Charles Goolsby and until  the present with Fredric Preffer. For both of us, it was an honor, and extraordinary pleasure, to  have the luck to work with Jan! Jan was always willing to do whatever was asked or needed, in an un-complaining, even keeled and quiet manner. He eased both our jobs greatly.

Jan, the list of your authored Cytometry articles shown on this website is testimony to your prodigious academic achievement, but only scratches the surface of your personal dedication to our field!  The Journal has made major progress over the last twenty years with your help and our sincere thanks go out to you for your significant role in making this progress possible. Jan, our sincere congratulations on your retirement and hope that you enjoy many new adventures in this next stage of your life. You will sincerely be missed by all of us involved with the Journal, but you leave with our heartfelt thanks for your years of service.

Sincerely
Charles Goolsby
Frederic Preffer
