PLGA facilitates DCs to induce a proliferative antigen-specific T-cell response to co-delivered antigen in vivo. This is an early precursor to the previously seen PLGA adjuvant effect. This effect is, at least in part, due to the influence of PLGA on DC phenotype and the subsequent antigen presentation ability. In the absence of  CD11c+ DCs, PLGA failed to induce strong antigen-specific T-cell responses indicating that DCs play a crucial role in PLGA's immunostimulatory effect.
