The influence of shorter red blood cell lifespan on the rate of HbA1c target achieved in type 2 diabetes patients with a HbA1c detection value lower than 7%
- Pages: 7-14
- First Published: 21 December 2022

Highlights
- Red blood cell (RBC) lifespan variation, is the main cause of variation in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), independent of blood glucose levels.
- This study highlighted the important impact of RBC lifespan on HbA1c test value in T2DM with HbA1c test value <7%.
- We discovered that the HbA1c test value in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients with RBC lifespan <90 days significantly underestimated their general blood glucose condition.
- Our results will provide more useful information to advance management of blood glucose levels for T2DM.

Changes in cardiovascular risk factors among children and young adults with type 1 diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to previous years—Results from the German DPV registry
- Pages: 15-26
- First Published: 09 January 2023

Highlights
- Cardiovascular risk factors worsened during COVID-19 in young people with type 1 diabetes.
- Blood pressure and atherogenic lipid levels were higher in 2020/2021 than expected.
- No further boost in 2020 and 2021 of the preexisting increase in body mass index-SD score.
- A reduction in organized sports but no change in smoking behavior was observed.

Developing a prediction model for all-cause mortality risk among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Shanghai, China
- Pages: 27-35
- First Published: 16 December 2022

Highlights
- This study constructed the first 5-year all-cause mortality risk prediction model for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in south China.
- This well-performing model, using highly accessible predictors collected in routine clinical settings, provides a powerful tool for clinicians to identify high-risk diabetic patients.

Reproductive factors and metabolic syndrome among Chinese women aged 40 years and older
- Pages: 36-46
- First Published: 16 December 2022

Highlights
- Reproductive variables are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components, but the results are conflicting.
- In this cross-sectional study involving 4453 women over 40, we found that reproductive variables, including menarche, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and menopause, may play a role in modulating the risk of MetS.
- Simple information on reproductive history could help identify women who might have a higher risk of metabolic disorder in their later life and prevent the subsequent related chronic diseases.

Effects of mobile health interventions on health-related outcomes in older adults with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
- Pages: 47-57
- First Published: 17 January 2023

Highlights
- Mobile health (mHealth) is an emerging forefront in patient-centric care.
- Efficacy of mHealth interventions on health outcomes among older adults with type 2 diabetes is limited.
- Modest benefits on cardiometabolic outcomes with mHealth interventions have uncovered critical gaps in the field and offered insights to address barriers at hand.

Effect of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors on the rate of decline in kidney function: A systematic review and meta-analysis
- Pages: 58-70
- First Published: 06 January 2023

Highlights
- Sodium/glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) showed an important renoprotective effect on sustained administration, regardless of the presence of diabetes, the baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and different types of SGLT-2i.
- There was an acute decline of eGFR in the initial administration (4.02 ml/min/1.73 m2), and renoprotective effect of SGLT-2i appeared subsequently, which should be noticed by clinicians.

Navigating barriers to affording and obtaining insulin and diabetes supplies
- Pages: 71-75
- First Published: 23 December 2022

Highlights
- Our study suggests that people with diabetes (PWD) face issues of affording and obtaining insulin and diabetes supplies, even in a population predominantly on private health insurance.
- Financially independent young adults reported increased compensatory strategies and resulting perilous behaviors to ration or obtain insulin and supplies, indicating that additional issues may arise once transitioning into adulthood.
- This study suggests that improved access and affordability of insulin and diabetes supplies is needed to reduce the financial burden and prevent adverse outcomes among PWD.

Artemether treatment improves islet function and metabolic homeostasis in diabetic nonhuman primates
- Pages: 76-80
- First Published: 09 January 2023
Highlights
- Artemether increased the serum concentration of c-peptide and decreased the usage of insulin in the diabetic monkey.
- Artemether downregulated the serum concentration of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the diabetic monkey.
- Artemether did not induce dramatic changes of the concentration of liver or kidney damage markers in the serum.
