Type 2 diabetes in the young in South Asia: Clinical heterogeneity and need for aggressive public health measures
- Pages: 610-612
- First Published: 08 May 2021
EDITOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS
Measuring the global, regional, and national burden of type 2 diabetes and the attributable risk factors in all 194 countries
- Pages: 613-639
- First Published: 24 January 2021

Highlights
- We revealed a high disease burden in the low-middle sociodemographic index (SDI) quintile, Southeast Asia, and Iran, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Georgia, and the Czech Republic, and determined that the increased burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) is mainly attributable to lifestyle factors (eg, high body mass index, low physical activity, high fasting plasma glucose, and high sugar-sweetened beverage and red meat intakes).
- Our study adds important information about the spatial distribution of T2DM burden and the contributions of risk factors to T2DM DALYs globally.
ORIGINAL ARTICLES
Atherosclerotic disease burden after bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes
- Pages: 640-647
- First Published: 29 December 2020

Highlights A nested, nationwide, propensity-matched cohort study was carried out using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink with 1186 patients with no past history of ASCVD, half of whom had undergone bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery was associated with improved ASCVD outcomes and lower mortality, highlighting a potential prognostic role of the surgery in patients with obesity and T2DM.
Low-grade albuminuria is associated with high cardiovascular risk in CVD-free and normoalbuminuric Chinese adults: Results from the REACTION study
- Pages: 648-660
- First Published: 02 January 2021

Highlights
- Low-grade albuminuria was significantly associated with high 10-year coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among cardiovascular disease-free and normoalbuminuric Chinese adults.
- The predictive urinary albumin to creatinine ratio value for high 10-year CHD risk differs between men and women.
The association of TV viewing time with 2-hour plasma glucose is modified by a prudent dietary pattern
- Pages: 661-671
- First Published: 05 January 2021

Highlights
- We used an a posteriori approach (factor analysis, principal component) to generate dietary patterns based on available datasets rather than an a priori approach based on pre-existing dietary guidelines (eg, dietary quality index).
- The strengths of this study include large sample size (N = 3081) and objectively measured fasting and 2-hour plasma glucose.
- Our research provides new evidence on the interactions between sitting time (TV viewing) and dietary patterns, particularly on the benefits of a healthy dietary pattern in relation to 2-hour plasma glucose.
Variation of IgG N-linked glycosylation profile in diabetic retinopathy
- Pages: 672-680
- First Published: 24 January 2021

Highlights
- Immunoglobulin G glycosylation variation was associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR), in which GP15, GP20, and IGP54 showed a negative trend and IGP32 positivity.
- The significant glycosylation panel, reflecting an aging and pro-inflammatory status, may capture a specific biological aspect and become a novel biomarker and drug target of DR.

A novel heterozygous mutation in the SLC5A2 gene causing severe glycosuria, mild failure to thrive, and subclinical hypoglycemia
- Pages: 688-692
- First Published: 24 April 2021

Highlights
- A novel heterozygous mutation in the SLC5A2 gene in a 2-year-old girl with severe asymptomatic glycosuria, mild failure to thrive, and subclinical hypoglycemia: Continuous glucose monitoring identified 14% hypoglycemic excursions (< 70 mg/dl), reduced at 1% with 1 g/Kg uncooked cornstarch at bed-time milk and eliminated (0%) adjusting the dose at 1.5 g/Kg, as shown by Flash technology.
