- Pages: 707-714
- First Published: 29 March 2022

(1). Coblation tonsillectomy was not superior to monopolar electrocautery tonsillectomy in terms of postoperative pain, except on postoperative days 1 and 2. (2). Monopolar electrocautery was superior to coblation in term of operation time, secondary PTH, and cost. Therefore, monopolar tonsillectomy should be used preferentially as the surgical technique.

- Pages: 751-756
- First Published: 22 April 2022

This study investigated the characteristics of cervical lymphangiomas in 7 adult patients. All cervical lymphangiomas from adults are often asymptomatic masses infiltrating or adjacent to surrounding vital structures, such as carotid sheath, sternocleidomastoid muscle and accessory nerve. Surgeons with extensive experience excised these lymphangiomas completely, and no recurrence was observed after a median 32 months follow-up period.
Definitive local therapy to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma with distant metastasis
- Pages: 757-765
- First Published: 06 May 2022

Data on the efficacy of including definitive local therapy to the primary site for HNSCC patients with synchronous distant metastasis are lacking. We show with a single institution retrospective study that survival outcomes in metastatic HNSCC patients treated with definitive local therapy to the primary are improved.

The prevalence and risk factors for perceived voice disorders in public school teachers
- Pages: 790-798
- First Published: 27 April 2022
We researched 3140 public kindergarten and elementary schools teachers through general investigation, and performed stepwise logistic regression model to identify uniquely increase risk factors for developing perceived voice disorder. Our investigation is the first study that showed teachers who continuous lecturing 3 or 4 classes had a 3.034-fold higher risk of PVD than those who have no continuous lecturing (OR = 3.034) in Mainland China. This proves that a preventive voice care program for teachers, administered by the school or education bureau, is urgent.

Recurrent sudden sensorineural hearing loss—A literature review
- Pages: 854-862
- First Published: 26 May 2022

This reveiw found a 1.4 to 17% recurrence rate after sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The recovery rate was 58 to 79% after the first episode and 21 to 86% after the second episode. The risk factors for recurrence may include low-frequency hearing loss and the presence of tinnitus during follow-up, but there are no common risk factors among each studies.

Congenital aural atresia and first branchial cleft anomalies: Cholesteatoma and surgical management
- Pages: 863-869
- First Published: 20 April 2022

When present in the context of congenital aural atresia, first branchial cleft anomalies are associated with a significant increased risk for cholesteatoma, often necessitating surgical management with favorable hearing outcomes. Among 125 children with congenital aural atresia, 5 (4%) were identified with first branchial cleft anomalies. Three-fifths (60%) of children with aural atresia and first branchial cleft anomalies presented with cholesteatoma compared with 1/120 (0.8%) children with aural atresia alone, a significant difference (p < .001).
A novel MPZL2 c.68delC variant is associated with progressive hearing loss in Chinese population and literature review
- Pages: 870-876
- First Published: 27 May 2022

In this study, we first identified two unrelated patients with MPZL2-related hearing loss in Chinese population, and a novel variant c.68delC. Our results expanded the mutation spectrum of deafness genes. Of all the biallelic MPZL2 individuals in literature, the predicted PTA [dB HL] was 38.82 + 0.59 × Age [years] (R2=0.383, p=0.0048), indicating a rate of deterioration of hearing of 0.59 dB HL per year.

Insomnia affects patient-reported outcome in sleep apnea treated with hypoglossal nerve stimulation
- Pages: 877-884
- First Published: 24 May 2022
To examine whether the presence of insomnia measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is associated with patient-reported outcomes and objective OSA measures in patients receiving HNS therapy in a follow-up situation. ESS and FOSQ scores were worse in the insomnia group at baseline, follow-up, and in the change from baseline, but AHI and ODI scores did not differ between patients with and without insomnia. Insomnia is associated with worse patient-reported outcomes of daytime sleepiness and sleep-related quality of life in OSA patients receiving HNS therapy.

A multi-institutional study evaluating and describing atypical parathyroid tumors discovered after parathyroidectomy
- Pages: 901-905
- First Published: 19 May 2022

In a multi-institution retrospective case series, 29 patients with the histopathologic diagnosis of atypical parathyroid adenoma were evaluated for the incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, recurrence of disease, and disease-specific mortality. Despite the new AJCC categorization of atypical adenomas staged as Tis, we observed no recurrence of disease after resection and no disease specific mortality. However, patients with atypical adenomas may be at increased risk for recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and incomplete resection.
