Emerging trends and the clinical impact of food insecurity in patients with diabetes
- Pages: 187-196
- First Published: 09 October 2019

Highlights
- Food insecurity is a major public health problem that highlights social disparities and negatively affects those with chronic diseases, including diabetes.
- Interventions targeting food insecurity in those with diabetes have shown little improvement in glycemic control despite improving food security status.
- This suggests a complex relationship between glycemic control and food insecurity that is likely mediated by many diverse socioeconomic factors.
ORIGINAL ARTICLES
Fructose tolerance test in obese people with and without type 2 diabetes
- Pages: 197-204
- First Published: 31 August 2019

Highlights
- Fructose raises uric acid, but the effect in diabetes is not known; people with type 2 diabetes have lower baseline uric acid than people without diabetes.
- Fructose loading leads to a blunted uric acid rise in people with type 2 diabetes; this effect is greater in obese people and those with poor glucose control.
- In contrast, glucose loading causes a fall in uric acid that is greater in diabetes patients; thus, people with diabetes have a different handling of uric acid than people without diabetes.
Markers for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus during pregnancy—A population-based retrospective cohort study
- Pages: 205-214
- First Published: 09 September 2019

Highlights
- This is the first study to demonstrate that glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is an excellent marker for undiagnosed diabetes when diabetes is diagnosed before 24 gestational weeks.
- HbA1c ≥ 5.8% is suggested as cutoff to distinguish between undiagnosed diabetes and gestational diabetes.
- Definitive diagnosis should be done after delivery.
The association between sleep efficiency and diabetes mellitus in community-dwelling individuals with or without sleep-disordered breathing
- Pages: 215-223
- First Published: 10 September 2019

Highlights
- This is the first study to investigate the association of sleep efficiency with diabetes mellitus based on polysomnography data.
- Individuals with poor sleep efficiency have a higher proportion of diabetes mellitus.
- This community-based cross-sectional study found that poor sleep efficiency is associated with prevalence of diabetes mellitus in participants without sleep-disordered breathing.
Faecalibacterium prausnitzii-derived microbial anti-inflammatory molecule regulates intestinal integrity in diabetes mellitus mice via modulating tight junction protein expression
- Pages: 224-236
- First Published: 10 September 2019

Highlights
- Diabetic conditions induce compositional dysbiosis of the gut microbiota and impair gut barrier integrity.
- Diabetic conditions markedly downregulate the abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in the gut.
- Under diabetic conditions, microbial anti-inflammatory molecules from Faecalibacterium prausnitzii restore the gut barrier and ZO-1 expression possibly through the tight junction pathway.
Design and validation of a scoring model for differential diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy and nondiabetic renal diseases in type 2 diabetic patients
- Pages: 237-246
- First Published: 10 October 2019

Highlights
- We presented the first prediction score for nondiabetic renal disease (NDRD) in patients with type 2 diabetes and renal impairment and validated it in an independent cohort with high accuracy (0.85).
- The prediction model shows better diagnostic performance for predicting NDRD than variables alone, such as absence of diabetic retinopathy.
G protein-coupled receptor kinase-2: A potential biomarker for early diabetic cardiomyopathy
- Pages: 247-258
- First Published: 06 October 2019

Highlights
- The GRK2 level elevated not only in the myocardium of diabetic mice with early stage of diabetic cardiomyopathy but also in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of type 2 diabetic patients with the early stage of diabetic cardiomyopathy.
- The study findings suggested that the GRK2 was a potential biomarker for early diabetic cardiomyopathy.
