The therapeutic effects of berberine for gastrointestinal cancers

Multiple effects of berberine (BBR) as a gastrointestinal (GI) cancer therapeutic agent. BBR acts as a potential anti-GI cancer agent by inducing apoptosis, autophagy, and cell-cycle arrest, as well as metastasis and angiogenesis inhibition. It plays an important role in suppressing GI cancer cells.

Factors beyond diagnosis and treatment that are associated with return to work in Australian cancer survivors—A systematic review

Understanding the return to work experience for cancer survivors is increasingly important as the number of cancer survivors grows. We describe the results of a systematic review looking at return to work in cancer survivors in Australia.

Construction and validation of a novel tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand mutant MuR5S4-TR

We constructed a novel TRAIL mutant with Cell penetrating peptides (CPP) like and Second mitochondria-derived activator of caspases (Smac) like structure-MuR5S4-TR. The MuR5S4-TR showed significant stronger antitumor effects than TRAIL in many tumor cell lines, in NCI-H460 lung cancer cell both in vitro and in vivo, for instance.

Risk factors for taxane-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with breast cancer

This study assessed the clinical risk factors for peripheral neuropathy caused by the progressively more widely used but less explored taxane drugs (AP and docetaxel) in breast cancer treatment through a prospective observational design study that extensively explored controversial and potential predictors. The results of univariate and multivariate analyses showed that cumulative dose, BMI, BSA, and hypocalcemia all increased the risk of TIPN.

Combination of hyperthermia and intravesical chemotherapy for the treatment of pT1 stage bladder cancer: A retrospectively clinical study

Chemo-thermotherapy has a beneficial prophylactic effect in patients with pT1 bladder cancer, especially in patients with high-grade UC, which is much more effective and safer than BCG, meanwhile it costs less compared with BCG.

When teams disagree: Investigating the incidence and causes of dissent occurring in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings

This study examined the incidence of dissent occurring in cancer multidisciplinary team meetings. Dissent was reported in 0.39% of case records, varying from 0 to 1.2% between cancer streams, and was likely underreported.

Toxicity profile of patients treated with proton and carbon-ion therapy for primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Studies showed the advantages of PBT compared to photon-based therapy in almost all toxicity outcomes. The improvement in toxicity outcomes is likely due to the improved dose distribution for PBT.

Functional results and feasibility of a teleprehabilitation program in patients who are candidates for elective colorectal cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic

Due to the pandemic, telerehabilitation services using technology to provide care to people, minimizing the barriers of distance, time, and cost were worldwide implemented. This study shows that candidates for elective colorectal cancer surgery had good functional results with telerehabilitation prior to surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Measurement that matters: A systematic review and modified Delphi of multidisciplinary colorectal cancer quality indicators

This study aimed to identify a priority set of quality indicators for measuring multidisciplinary colorectal cancer care in Australia. Utilising a systematic review and 2-step modified Delphi methodology, a final 26 indicators were identified across the colorectal cancer patient pathway from diagnosis to follow-up or palliative/supportive care.

Prognostic value of diffuse reduction of spleen density on postoperative survival of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: A retrospective study

We found that the diffuse reduction of spleen density (DROSD) is an independent risk factor for the overall survival of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). In addition, we developed a nomogram combined with imaging features, clinicopathological factors, and systemic inflammatory response to provide a personalized risk assessment for patients with PDAC.

Impact of multidisciplinary team meetings on the management of patients with breast cancer in a large private healthcare facility

For optimal breast cancer care, multidisciplinary meetings are required to discuss complex cases and reach consensus decisions across multiple management categories. This study evaluated both decision-making and concordance between proposed decisions and clinical implementation for breast cancer patients at a large private hospital, noting a high uptake of recommendations.

Clinical features of gestational choriocarcinoma: A retrospective bicentric study

GCC is an unique subtype of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, which differs from others in terms of poor prognosis, a frequent tendency to early metastasis, and resistance to treatment. For the most efficient therapy and prognosis, histopathology-based risk models should be developed.

Population attributable fractions of modifiable cancer risk factors in Korea: A systematic review

This study reviewed 16 studies that reported the PAFs of risk factors for cancer, including smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and various cancer sites. PAF estimates for smoking and respiratory cancer were consistently high in men. PAF estimates were higher in men than in women for smoking and alcohol consumption but higher in women for obesity.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and cytokine release syndrome (CRS) in a patient with oncogene-addicted metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following combination chemotherapy-immunotherapy

Hematophagocytosis (HLH) and cytokine release syndrome (CRS) following administration of combination carboplatin/paclitaxel/atezolizumab/bevacizumab in a patient with oncogene-addicted metastatic non-small cell lung cancer – a rare, potentially life-threatening, irAE for oncologists to be aware of which necessitates early multidisciplinary consultation and engagement.
