Fecal microbiota transplantation in recurrent Clostridium difficile infection: A retrospective single-center chart review

Recurrent Clostridium difficile infections are becoming more prevalent, and new methods of treatment are being encouraged, such as fecal microbiota transplantation. In our manuscript, we show that fecal microbiota transplantation is an effective means of treating recurrent Clostridium difficile infections.

Specific adverse events predict survival rates in a Chinese population diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and treated with sorafenib

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and adverse events (AEs) of sorafenib therapy in a Chinese population diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and the results found that sorafenib-related AEs, including HFSR, hypertension, and diarrhea, can predict positive therapy efficacy to HCC.

Differences in the genetic backgrounds of patients with alcoholic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

The common and independent genes might be associated with the progression and hepatocarcinogenesis of ALD and NAFLD.

Conscious sedation using propofol versus midazolam in cirrhotic patients during upper GI endoscopy: A comparative study

Propofol should replace midazolam in our endoscopic units, especially for cirrhotic patients that are scheduled to undergo upper GI endoscopy.

Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction for diagnosis of gastrointestinal tuberculosis

In this prospective study, multiplex PCR using specific primers for genes IS6110, MPB64, and Protein b had a higher sensitivity compared to conventional techniques for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal tuberculosis.

Nomogram predicting extrahepatic metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma based on commonly available clinical data

We have developed a nomogram that could accurately predict extrahepatic metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and be readily available for formulating individualized treatment for all individual HCC patients to improve therapeutic efficacy.

Significance of ileal and/or cecal wall thickening on abdominal computed tomography in a tropical country

Ileocecal thickening is frequently reported on computed tomography. The clinical and endoscopic significance of this is uncertain. In this study of 50 patients, we have shown that the majority of patients have an underlying disease, and therefore, these patients should undergo ileocolonoscopy.

Hepatocellular carcinoma after direct-acting antiviral drug treatment in patients with hepatitis C virus

Direct-acting antivirals did not increase the rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), even in immunosuppressed patients. However, careful follow-up for HCC recurrence is required in previously treated cases.

Risk factors for delayed hemorrhage after colonoscopic postpolypectomy: Polyp size and operative modality

The study was a retrospective cohort analysis of patients hospitalized for colonoscopic polypectomy. A total of 1962 polyps were detected in patients and they underwent polypectomy; hemorrhage occurred in 41 cases. A correlation was demonstrated between postpolypectomy hemorrhage and each of the following factors: polyp size and operative modality.

Palliation of malignant gastroduodenal obstruction with self-expandable metal stent using side- and forward-viewing endoscope: Feasibility and outcome

We studied the feasibility and outcome of SEMS placement using side- and forward-viewing endoscopes. Technical and clinical success, complication rate between side- and forward-viewing endoscopes were comparable. However, SEMS could be placed in shorter time using forward- rather than side-viewing endoscope.

Thoracic complications of pancreatitis

Acute lung injury is an important cause of mortality in the setting of severe acute pancreatitis. Besides lung involvement, acute and chronic pancreatitis may also lead to the involvement of other thoracic compartments including mediastinum, pleura, and vascular structures. In this review, we discuss the thoracic complications of pancreatitis including lung, pleural, mediastinal and vascular manifestations.

Migration route of Fasciola into the liver

After ingestion, fasciola metacercariae penetrate the duodenal wall, migrate through the peritoneal cavity and enter the liver. After a period migrating randomly through the liver parenchyma, they eventually reach the larger biliary ducts and mature into adults. We present a case that illustrates this migration route of Fasciola.

Long-scope position insertion for a challenging bile duct access by a novel digital single-operator cholangioscope (SpyGlass DS) in periampullary diverticulum

Single-operator cholangioscopy (SOC) is a valuable diagnostic (e.g. stricture) and therapeutic (e.g. lithotripsy) platform for treatment of complex biliary diseases. Technical success rates, i.e. advancement up to a pre-defined target lesion, are generally high. Anatomic factors, such as periampullary diverticula, however, may complicate scope insertion, for which a novel troubleshooter technique, designated the “long scope position insertion”, is presented here.
