In this special issue we sought to engage a global community of scholars and practitioners to explore the financial, managerial, accountability and governance challenges facing this sector. Potential contributors were encouraged to interpret this theme broadly, yet critically, applying diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives to a wide range of countries and regional settings. The papers included in this special issue adopted novel and interdisciplinary frameworks which were applied to a variety of complex issues facing the third sector. These covered sustainability, resilience, and adaptability in the face of crisis and sectoral challenges, performance reporting and measurements and participatory governance and co-production.
