RIOK1: A Novel Oncogenic Driver in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

This study reveals that the atypical protein kinase RIOK1, found to be elevated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues, may promote HCC cell proliferation by affecting the cell cycle and DNA repair pathways. Five potential effectors were identified, which were highly expressed in HCC tissues and negatively correlated with patient survival. Our findings suggest RIOK1 may serve as a novel diagnostic and therapeutic target for HCC.

Lung Cancer Detection Using Bayesian Networks: A Retrospective Development and Validation Study on a Danish Population of High-Risk Individuals

We employed Bayesian networks to predict lung cancer risk within a high-risk Danish cohort. Regardless of the extent of missing data, Bayesian networks yielded consistent results, suggesting potential for future lung cancer detection models.

Application of Esophageal Sponge Cytology in Screening Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a High-Risk Region of China

  • First Published: 24 January 2025

We used an esophageal cell collector that was independently developed in China for screening ESCC in high-risk regions of China, which showed that esophageal sponge cytology is a safe, accurate, and convenient method for screening ESCC.

Impact of a Nurse Navigator Program on Referral Rates and Use of Fertility Preservation Among Female Cancer Patients: A 14-Year Retrospective Cohort Study

A Nurse Navigator Program facilitates the referral pathway for patients with a cancer diagnosis interested in fertility preservation and results in higher referral and utilization rates of fertility preservation services for patients prior to receiving cancer treatment.

Lipid Profile, PCSK9, ANGPTL3 and Lipoprotein (a) Levels in Men Diagnosed With Localized High-Grade Prostate Cancer and Men At-Risk of Prostate Cancer

Measured prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels are correlated with the lipid profile and ANGPTL3 levels in men at risk for prostate cancer but no longer display this correlation in men diagnosed with prostate cancer. PCSK9 and PSA levels appear to be inversely correlated in the entire study cohort, gathering men at risk and men with prostate cancer.

Expression of Lymphoid Enhancer-Binding Factor 1 in Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Mediates Tumor Growth and Transdifferentiation Toward Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Human Breast Cancer

This study focuses on cancer-associated fibroblasts in human breast cancer. Our findings of the involvement of LEF1-expressing CAFs in the tumor growth promotion and squamous cell carcinogenesis will expand the understanding on the significance of cancer cell–stromal cell interaction in cancer malignancy.

Cause-Specific Mortality and Prognostic Impact of Comorbidity in Japanese Patients With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Cause-Specific Mortality and Prognostic Impact of Comorbidity in Japanese Patients With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Due to its rarity, there are very limited data available on cause of death (COD) and its association with comorbidities in Japanese chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients. Here, we report granular insight into treatment patterns, infectious disease burden, cause-specific survival, and associated risk factors in a real-world Japanese CLL cohort. Our study showed that CLL itself was the leading COD, and comorbidity burden was associated with non-CLL-specific deaths, highlighting the importance of better disease control and effective management of comorbidities.

Transarterial Chemoembolization With or Without Systemic Therapy for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Retrospective Comparative Study

Transarterial chemoembolization in combination with systemic antitumor therapy demonstrated improved survival benefits in patients with intermediate to advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly among surgical patients with higher tumor burden.

Dietary Quality and Intake of Cancer Caregivers: A Systematic Review of Quantitative Studies and Recommendations for Future Research

Dietary Quality and Intake of Cancer Caregivers: A Systematic Review of Quantitative Studies and Recommendations for Future Research

This systematic review synthesized current quantitative evidence on the dietary quality and intake of cancer caregivers. There is some evidence to suggest that caring for someone with cancer may negatively impact diet, though findings are largely inconclusive. Larger, longitudinal studies using validated measures, repeated observations, and comparison to individual or population-based guidelines are needed to better understand the impacts of caregiving on diet.
