Nicorandil treatment improves survival and spatial learning in aged granulin knockout mice

Nicorandil treatment improves survival and spatial learning in aged granulin knockout mice

Progranulin knockout mice display a profound reduction in survival, as well as increased inflammation and cognitive impairment. Treatment of these mice with nicorandil—a K+ATP channel agonist, decreased mortality and improves cognitive impairment.

Subcortical plaques and inflammation reflect cortical and meningeal pathologies in progressive multiple sclerosis

In progressive MS, mixed active plaques and perivascular inflammation in the sub/juxtacortical white matter correlate with similar (albeit fainter) pathologies in the cortical parenchyma

The prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a historical epilepsy post-mortem collection

The prevalence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a historical epilepsy post-mortem collection

In an archival epilepsy post-mortem collection from last century, chronic traumatic encephalopathy identified in 15.7% was associated with traumatic brain injury. Alzheimer's disease neuropathology change was increased in late-onset epilepsy but in 8% of cases with severe epilepsy there was no tau pathology found.

Altered immune response is associated with sex difference in vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease in human prefrontal cortex

Altered immune response is associated with sex difference in vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease in human prefrontal cortex

This study analyzes four public transcriptome datasets from AD patients and age-matched controls, revealing that the transcriptomic profile in female controls closely resembles that of AD patients. We identified a co-expressed gene module associated with AD, sex, and aging, enriched with immune-related functions. Notably, upregulated genes in female microglia, which substantially overlap with the co-expressed gene module, may serve as potential biomarkers to distinguish AD from normal individuals. This work highlights the importance of sex factor in AD research and treatment strategies.
