A novel co-monomer 5-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-1H-indole (EDTI), based on the combinations of indole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) groups, was synthesized and electrodeposited into flawless free-standing flexible poly(5-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-1H-indole) (PEDTI) film by Rui Wang, Guo Ye, Weiqiang Zhou and their colleagues. The colors of as-prepared PEDTI film could switch reversibly from purple to brown during the n- and p-doping. Fluorescence spectral studies revealed PEDTI was good blue-green light emitter with the best emission wavelength 461 nm and 488 nm. These results implied that PEDTI had potential applications for photoelectric devices. DOI: 10.1002/app.47016.

Design and synthesis of antibacterial waterborne fluorinated polyurethane

Design and synthesis of antibacterial waterborne fluorinated polyurethane

We show the novel contact-active antibacterial and antifouling surfaces constructed by these antibacterial GWFPUs. The novel chain extender DMG (Dimethylol propionamide containing guanidine group) was designed and synthesized, which has not been reported before. DMG applied in these WFPUs possesses much stronger surface activity and permanent antibacterial activity than the normal polyhexamethylene biguanide. More importantly, such antibacterial surfactant can accumulate at polymer/air interface to form antibacterial layer because of the high interfacial energy. DMG and the waterborne fluorinated polyurethanes containing DMG show high bactericidal (>99.99%) efficacy against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, when the amount of DMG reached 5%, the average particle size of waterborne fluorinated polyurethane dispersions was 56.24 nm. The successful synthesis of these fascinating antibacterial waterborne materials may provide new insights into the development of protection materials in a sustainable form.

Double layer aligned-graphene nanosheets/styrene-butadiene rubber composites: Tribological and mechanical properties

The double layer aligned-graphene nanosheets/styrene-butadiene rubber composites with ultrahigh mechanical and wear-resistant properties can be prepared by one-step emulsion polymerization method. The structure of aligned-graphene nanosheets can dramatically improve the properties of mechanics and tribology. Such as 59% decrease of friction coefficient and 1778% increase of the initial tensile modulus when the addition of graphene nanosheets is 5 wt %.

Indolo[3,2-b]carbazole-based poly(arylene ethynylene)s through Sonogashira coupling for optoelectronic and sensing applications

Indolo[3,2-b]carbazole-based poly(arylene ethynylene)s through Sonogashira coupling for optoelectronic and sensing applications

New indolo[3,2-b] carbazole-based semiconducting polymers ICZP1 and ICZP2, possessing photostability, low-lying HOMO, narrow band gap, and high charge mobility because of the combined effect of fused heterocyclic ring of indolocarbazole, anthracene, and fluorene have been reported. The materials are suitable for the fabrication of active layer in photovoltaic cells, NLO materials, and sensors.
