Deep Underground Science and Engineering Journal inauguration ceremony at the International Forum on Innovation and Development of Yunlong Lake Laboratory
The inauguration ceremony for the Journal of Deep Underground Science and Engineering (DUSE) and the International Forum on Innovation and Development of Yunlong Lake Laboratory was held in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China on Nov 12th, 2022. More than 1,000 experts and scholars participated in the event both in person and virtually. DUSE is the first journal in the field of deep underground science, published on behalf of the China University of Mining and Technology.
Professor Xiaozhao Li, Director of the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering, Director of the Yunlong Lake Laboratory and Associate Editor of DUSE, presided the inauguration ceremony. Professor Li pointed out that DUSE is led by the State Key Laboratory for Geomechanics and Deep Underground Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology, and approved by the State Press and Publication Administration in 2021. The journal has invited Qihu Qian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and other recipients of the highest national science and technology award as consultants, and Heping Xie, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as the Editor-in-Chief. The journal aims to publish "the latest innovative, forward-looking and leading achievements in the field of core basic research, disruptive technology development, major project construction, special environmental effects, and more. International reach and competitiveness in this field are significant.”

The guests of honors for the inauguration ceremony of DUSE were Secretary Bo Liu of the Party Committee of China University of Mining and Technology, Professor Eivind Grøv of the Norwegian Academy of Technology, and Rebecca J. Lunn of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) and Royal Academy of Edinburgh (FRSE). Professor Heping Xie, DUSE Editor-in-Chief, Yan Wu, Wiley Senior Publishing Director, Su Wang, Director of Science and Technology Journals Division of the China Association for Science and Technology, and Tieming Zhang, Chairman of China Association of University Science and Technology Research, delivered speeches at the inauguration ceremony.

During his speech, Professor Heping Xie highlighted the background of the establishment of DUSE and made invitations to the scholars present to actively contribute and participate in making DUSE a leading international journal with global influence, leading the field of deep science. Professor Xie mentioned that "With the rapid development of the global economy, resources in the shallow part of the earth are becoming increasingly scarce. DUSE aims to lead in the field of "Deep Earth Science" and the Journal is published by China University of Mining and Technology in collaboration with the internationally renowned publisher Wiley."

The establishment and development of this journal are both at the right time and place.”

Following the inauguration ceremony, Jianguo Wang, Associate Editor of the journal and a distinguished professor at China University of Mining and Technology, presided over an expert panel on the subject of "Deep Earth Science and Engineering". Professor Chunfai LEUNG, an academician of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, Jiaqi Xiao, a candidate for the National Major Talent Project, and Ming Luy, an academician of the Norwegian Academy of Engineering, respectively conducted sessions on "Prospects for Deep Earth Science and Engineering Research", "Research and Development of Intelligent Drilling System" and "Innovation - The Driving Force for the Development of Norwegian Underground Engineering Technology". The contents of the above reports focus on the current hot issues and cutting-edge research in the field of deep underground science, and reinforced that interdisciplinary and inter-international cooperation is conducive to academic innovation. There were highly active academic exchanges and discussions after presentations of the three reports.
