Journal of Common Market Studies - Annual Review of the European Union

Aims & Scope

The Annual Review is a key component of the JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS), sharing its overall aim of publishing high quality, innovative and accessible articles that advance debates in European and comparative regionalism studies. Within this common endeavour, the specific role of the Annual Review is to provide rigorous analyses of the most important events and/or trends that emerge year by year in the context of the European Union, including an Annual Lecture delivered by a leading scholar or practitioner.

The Annual Review covers the key developments in the European Union, its member states, and acceding and/or applicant countries in the previous year, including important developments in the domestic or external arena that shape the political debates in Europe. The Annual Review is the most up-to-date and authoritative source of information for practitioners, scholars, students and researchers of European integration as well as for general readers who simply want to know more about the European Union and have a pluralism of voices.

In line with the ethos and inspiring principles of the JCMS, the AR is a multidisciplinary outlet, open to all methodological and theoretical approaches. In addition, the Annual Review is actively promoting a balanced set of contributors in terms of gender, career stage and country/continent where they are based.

Publication Timing, Composition and Authorship

The Annual Review is published once a year, as a separate issue of JCMS, containing usually 14/15 short articles (about 5,000 words), including an editorial piece, the annual lecture and a chronology (online only). The Annual Review is produced in print in September each year (analysing events and trends of the previous year). Individual articles however, appear on early view online prior to the print edition.

Authors are mainly selected and invited by the Annual Review’s editors. However, we are open to consider proposals from academics and practitioners who offer to provide an expert contribution on a salient issue of the year.
