Author Guidelines

Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology will be published in online-only format effective with the 2021 volume. This is a proactive move towards reducing the environmental impact caused by the production and distribution of printed journal copies and will allow the journal to invest in further innovation, digital development and sustainability measures. Published articles will continue to be disseminated quickly through the journal’s broad network of indexing services, including ISI, MEDLINE and Scopus. Articles will also continue to be discoverable through popular search engines such as Google. All colour images will now be reproduced digitally and published free of charge.

Conflict of Interest Statement

Authors will be asked to provide a conflict of interest statement during the submission process. For details on what to include in this section, see the section 'Conflict of Interest' in the Best Practice Guidelines on Publishing Ethics. Submitting authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement.

Approvals
In all original work the authors should state that they have obtained appropriate consent and ethical approval for the study and that animal work conforms to appropriate local standards, specifying what these are.

Articles Considered

Original Articles
Original Articles should be concisely written. The paper should begin with an abstract of no more than 250 words, and the body of the text should not exceed 5000 words. The abstract should be structured under the headings: aims, methods, results, conclusions. The article should then proceed to Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion sections. Details that might disclose the identity of any patients should be omitted.

Reviews
Reviews should be on a topic of current interest and no longer than 6000 words. They should be interestingly written with a full, unstructured abstract and aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the subject. References should not exceed 150.

Concise Reviews
Short reviews should be on a topic of current interest, to highlight significant and recent developments in the field. They should be no longer than 2000 words with 30 to 40 references. They should be interestingly written with a full abstract and aim to instruct and stimulate rather than to gain total coverage of the subject. Commentaries in relation to recent significant papers and developments will also be considered.

Short Communications
Brief reports and case reports may be published as Short Communications. These should report significant and novel scientific or clinical information. Case reports should clearly state what is new or unique in the opening paragraph. Correspondence in response to published papers may also be accepted if it raises significant points or interesting issues for debate. Reports should be written concisely and formatted as an extended letter, without headings. Scientific correspondence are published without abstracts. The report should be no longer than 1500 words with up to 15 references and a maximum of 2 figures or tables if required (articles may be longer at the Editor’s discretion). Details that might disclose the identity of any patients should be omitted.

Letter to the Editor
Letters to the Editor may provide new insight, make corrections, offer alternative theories, or request clarification about content printed in the journal. They should address the Editor of the journal, include a title page (full title, authors list including affiliations, corresponding author contact details, word count) and body of the text not exceeding 500 words. The reference list should not exceed 5 items.

Preparation and Submission of your Manuscript

Research Exchange Manuscripts
New submissions should be made via the Research Exchange submission portal https://wiley.atyponrex.com/journal/NANShould your manuscript proceed to the revision stage, you will be directed to make your revisions via the same submission portal.   • Acknowledgments;
  • Abstract
  • Up to eight keywords;
  • Main body;
  • References;
  • Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes);
  • Figures: Figure legends must be added beneath each individual image during upload AND as a complete list in the text.

Article Preparation Support
Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration, figure formatting, and graphical abstract design – so you can submit your manuscript with confidence.

Also, check out our resources for Preparing Your Article for general guidance about writing and preparing your manuscript.

Search engine optimisation
Many students and researchers looking for information online will use search engines such as Google, Yahoo or similar. By optimising your article for search engines, you will increase the chance of someone finding it. This in turn will make it more likely to be viewed and/or cited in another work.

Please see the Tips Sheet for optimising the discoverability of your article and promoting it post-publication, and this Wiley Exchanges blog post for advice on choosing keywords for your article.

Title Page
All manuscripts submitted should include a title page, with the following information:
- Names and affiliation details for all contributing authors;
- The name and e-mail address of the corresponding author for correspondence purposes;
- Up to eight keywords (according to Index Medicus, Medical Subject Heading - if possible) for indexing;
- A short running title;
- The number of words in the text of the article and the number of figures and tables should be stated.

Key Points
A key points box should be provided within the manuscript for all article types except Letters. This should include 3-5 key points (bulleted sentences).

Language Requirement
The journal requires standard British English for its submissions.

Abbrevations
Abbrevations in the text should be avoided: if used, they should be written out in full when first used. Please provide a list of abbreviations used after the abstract for reference.

Figure Files
The total number of figures and tables for your manuscript should not exceed 8. Excess figures and/or tables can be designated as Supporting Information and will be published online only in a distinct section beneath the main manuscript.

Figures should be supplied as JPEG, EPS or TIFF files. If you supply your Figure in Line Art (ie in an image composed of lines and text, such as graphs, charts and illustrations), please save it in vector formats (EPS). Otherwise, please supply the final figure without white space (closely cropped) at final size in 600 dpi TIFF or JPG format.

For further information please see the Electronic Artwork Guidelines available at http://media.wiley.com/assets/7323/92/electronic_artwork_guidelines.pdf

Figures should be submitted individually, but an additional composite to show figure arrangement, with labelling, can be submitted for multi-panel figures. These can be submitted as Word, Powerpoint or PDF files. The figures should be arranged to make best use of the dimensions of the journal page (276mm x 210mm). More detailed advice on figure preparation is available on the Wiley website.

All figures of your manuscript will undergo an integrity check. In case of any doubt, raw data will be requested. Publication will proceed on the condition that all final files comply with the journal integrity checks. In the event that any file does not comply with our integrity checks, you may be contacted to resolve any concerns raised by these checks.

Graphical TOC
The journal’s table of contents will be presented in graphical form with a brief abstract.

The table of contents entry must include the article title, the authors' names (with the corresponding author indicated by an asterisk), no more than 80 words or 3 sentences of text summarizing the key findings presented in the paper and a figure that best represents the scope of the paper.

The image supplied should fit within the dimensions of 50mm x 60mm and be fully legible at this size.

Data Sharing and Data Accessibility
Please review Wiley’s policy here. This journal expects data sharing.

Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology recognizes the many benefits of archiving research data. Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology expects you to archive all the data from which your published results are derived in a public repository. The repository that you choose should offer you guaranteed preservation (see the registry of research data repositories at https://www.re3data.org/) and should help you make it findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-useable, according to FAIR Data Principles (https://www.force11.org/group/fairgroup/fairprinciples).

All accepted manuscripts are required to publish a data availability statement to confirm the presence or absence of shared data. If you have shared data, this statement will describe how the data can be accessed, and include a persistent identifier (e.g. a DOI for the data, or an accession number) from the repository where you shared the data. Authors will be required to confirm adherence to the policy. If you cannot share the data described in your manuscript, for example for legal or ethical reasons, or do not intend to share the data then you must provide the appropriate data availability statement. Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology notes that FAIR data sharing allows for access to shared data under restrictions (e.g., to protect confidential or proprietary information) but notes that the FAIR principles encourage you to share data in ways that are as open as possible (but that can be as closed as necessary).

Sample statements are available here. If published, all statements will be placed in the heading of your manuscript.

Accompanying Documents

Covering Letter
In your covering letter to the Editor-in-Chief, please confirm that your manuscript has not and will not be published elsewhere other than in abstract form, and that all of the contributing authors have seen and approved the manuscript. Any conflict of interest in respect of the manuscript contents should also be disclosed. When necessary, the authors should state that they have obtained appropriate consent and ethical approval for studies and that animal work conforms to appropriate local standards, specifying what these are. Please highlight in the covering letter the reasons why the manuscript is well suited to Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology.

Please see below under Open Access for information about the Open Access Exclusive Licence Form.

Editorial Process
The following outline is supplied to help authors understand how editorial decisions are made. However, please note that this is a general outline and we will vary these processes to allow the editorial team to act in the most appropriate manner in specific cases.

Following submission, manuscripts are reviewed by the editor in chief, in many cases with the help of an executive editor. All manuscripts are subjected to a similarity check to identify suspected instances of plagiarism. Manuscripts that are unlikely to be competitive or are not suitable for the journal are rejected before peer-review. Manuscripts will potential for publication are sent for independent peer-review. The final decision to accept, reject or consider a resubmission is that of the editor in chief. This decision will be based both on his own assessment, and on the advice received from the executive editor and peer-reviewers. In making that decision, the editor takes account of a number of factors including, but not limited to, the quality of the scientific data, the novelty of the findings, the suitability and priority of the manuscript for the journal, any relevant ethical issue, and the quality of the material (including the figures and English).
Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology is a member of the Committee for Publication Ethics (COPE; http://publicationethics.org/) and adheres to all guidelines.

Free Format Submission
Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology now offers Free Format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.

Before you submit, you will need:

  • Your manuscript: this should be an editable file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract (which does need to be correctly styled), introduction, methods, results, and Figures and tables should have legends. Figures should be uploaded in the highest resolution possible. If the figures are not of sufficiently high quality your manuscript may be delayed. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. Supporting information should be submitted in separate files. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers, and the editorial office will send it back to you for revision. Your manuscript may also be sent back to you for revision if the quality of English language is poor.
  • An ORCID ID, freely available at https://orcid.org. (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasingly requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)
  • The title page of the manuscript, including:
    • Your co-author details, including affiliation and email (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
    • Statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies, which may include any of the following (Why are these important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication):
      • data availability statement
      • funding statement
      • conflict of interest disclosure
      • ethics approval statement
      • patient consent statement
      • permission to reproduce material from other sources
      • clinical trial registration

To submit, login via the submission site and create a new submission. Follow the submission steps as required and submit the manuscript.

Transparent Peer Review
Please note: The transparent peer review option is temporarily unavailable until further notice.
This journal is participating in a pilot on Peer Review Transparency. By submitting to this journal, authors agree that the reviewer reports, their responses, and the editor’s decision letter will be linked from the published article to where they appear on Publons in the case that the article is accepted. Authors have the opportunity to opt out during submission, and reviewers may remain anonymous unless they would like to sign their report.

Production

Proofs
Authors will receive an e-mail notification with a link and instructions for accessing HTML page proofs online. Page proofs should be carefully proofread for any copyediting or typesetting errors. Online guidelines are provided within the system. No special software is required, all common browsers are supported. Authors should also make sure that any renumbered tables, figures, or references match text citations and that figure legends correspond with text citations and actual figures. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt of the email. Return of proofs via e-mail is possible in the event that the online system cannot be used or accessed. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately. The journal does not have handling charges.

Open Access
Open Access is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With Open Access, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For more information about Article Publication Charges, please visit the Open Access page.

Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper Open Access if you do not wish to. All Open Access articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

Offprints
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form that accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact the publisher if offprints do not arrive: however, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to six weeks to arrive. Please click on the following link, fill in the necessary details and ensure that you type information in all of the required fileds: www.sheridan.com/wiley/eocElectronic offprints are sent to the corresponding author at his or her first email address on the title page of the paper, unless advised otherwise; therefore please ensure that the name, address and email of the receiving author are clearly indicated on the manuscript title page if he or she is not the first author of the paper.

Preprints
This journal will consider for review articles previously available as preprints on non-commercial servers such as ArXiv, bioRxiv, psyArXiv, SocArXiv, engrXiv, etc. Authors may also post the submitted version of their manuscript to non-commerical servers at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.

ORCID iD

This journal requires submitting authors to provide their ORCID iD, a unique, persistent identifier available at no charge to researchers. The submitting author can provide this information in the submission system.

You can refer to Wiley’s resources on ORCID iDs or visit the ORCID site to create or check your identifier number.

Corrections to authorship
In accordance with Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines on Research Integrity and Publishing Ethics and the Committee on Publication Ethics’ guidance, Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology will allow authors to correct authorship on a submitted, accepted, or published article if a valid reason exists to do so. All authors – including those to be added or removed – must agree to any proposed change. To request a change to the author list, please complete the Request for Changes to a Journal Article Author List Form and contact either the journal’s editorial or production office, depending on the status of the article. Authorship changes will not be considered without a fully completed Author Change form. Correcting the authorship is different from changing an author’s name; the relevant policy for that can be found in Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines under “Author name changes after publication.”

Article Promotion Support
Wiley Editing Services offers professional video, design, and writing services to create shareable video abstracts, infographics, conference posters, lay summaries, and research news stories for your research – so you can help your research get the attention it deserves.
