Summary

This chapter focuses on the representation of 3D models as polygonal, usually triangular, meshes but limits to discussing the shape of objects. The colors and/or textures associated with the illustrations presented in the chapter are purely decorative, with no relevance or impact on the methods presented. The chapter discusses the general principles of 3D indexing before considering global 3D shape descriptors, 2D view descriptors and local 3D shape descriptors. It then presents the principles of 3D shape retrieval in video sequences, followed by methods for evaluating 3D indexing and recognition. Finally, the chapter explains certain key applications of indexing and 3D recognition.
