Abstract

Selenium surrounded by oxygen in a trigonal-bipyramidal arrangment—this unprecedented bonding pattern exists for Li4SeO5, the first orthoselenate (see picture). It crystallizes as an order variant of a predicted AB structure in which cations and anions are equally coordinated as A[5]B[5].
