Als Template für die Selbstorganisation der Liganden 1 dienen Lanthanoidionen. Dabei wird das dreisträngige Helicat 2 erhalten, das sich durch Behandeln mit Brom und anschließend mit Wasser in den neunzähnigen Tripod-Rezeptor 3 überführen läßt. Beim Versuch der direkten Synthese von 3 ohne LnIII-Ionen werden nur 20 % des gewünschten Rezeptors (fac-Isomer) in einer Mischung mit dem mer-Isomer erhalten.
