Demonstration of autonomous fixed-wing drone delivery of prescribed medications in remote islands in Japan

We demonstrated a combination of online medication counseling and drone delivery of medications dispensed by pharmacists in two rural clinics located far from pharmacies on remote islands in Japan. After being prescribed by physicians, dispensed by pharmacists, and online medication counseling, the medications were transported by autonomous fixed-wing drones, dropped, and picked up by the staff.

Factors associated with hypertonic dehydration in older Japanese outpatients

The purpose of this study is to statistically identify the risk factors for hypertonic dehydration among older population in Japan. This cross-sectional study included outpatients aged ≥65 years who visited an internal medicine clinic. Decreased fluid intake, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and polypharmacy were independently associated with hypertonic dehydration in older Japanese outpatients.

Spinal amyloid deposits are common among older patients undergoing spinal stenosis decompression surgery

In this report, we demonstrate that spinal stenosis is associated with amyloid deposits in the spine. We further demonstrate that amyloid deposits are present not only in the ligamentum flavum but also in the disc tissue. We subsequently examined patients for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy and found no evidence in patients tested.

Predicting 30-day mortality in older patients with suspected infections by adding performance status to quick sequential organ failure assessment

  • Pages: 238-245
  • First Published: 05 February 2025

The extended model (ECOG-PS + qSOFA) significantly improved discrimination in predicting mortality among older patients with suspected infections compared to the model with qSOFA alone (p = 0.008), with the net reclassification index revealing that 21 (17.5%) of the deceased were elevated to a higher risk category. This approach integrates routinely measured functional measures for enhanced risk assessment.

An observational study to determine the optimal physical evaluation site for detecting anemia

Typically, for detecting anemia, primary care physicians subjectively judge whether or not a patient is pale by looking at the color of the conjunctiva, lips, nails, and palms. In this study, we have identified which part of the body is most suitable for assessing paleness.

Extreme hypercalcemia secondary to parathyroid adenoma obscured by excessive coffee consumption and premature ventricular complexes

Diagnostic biases are potentially life-threatening. We present a case of extreme hypercalcemia falsely diagnosed as premature ventricular complexes attributed to heavy coffee consumption, while symptoms and electrocardiographic findings of hypercalcemia were disregarded.

Addressing healthcare needs in an inaugural family medicine clinic in a core city in Japan: Mixed-methods research

This study aimed to reveal how family medicine can swiftly respond to healthcare needs by examining an inaugural family medicine clinic. These findings underscore the unique significance of family medicine clinics, particularly in areas with abundant specialist medical care resources.
