Clinical significance

Polymerization shrinkage can lead to treatment failure by causing secondary caries, enamel cracks, posttreatment pain, and pulpitis. Since the type of material has a role in the amount of this shrinkage, using composites with lower polymerization shrinkage causes restorations with increased longevity.
