Earlier effect of alendronate in mouse metaphyseal versus diaphyseal bone healing

Effect of bisphosphonate treatment on mechanical strength over time: A strong improvement in the metaphysis already at 2 weeks due to increased intertrabecular bone mass. Improvement in the diaphysis at 4 weeks due to decreased remodeling.

Virtual stress testing of fracture stability in soldiers with severely comminuted tibial fractures

Virtual stress testing (VST) uses finite element analysis of computed tomography scans to estimate the structural stability of a healing bone. VST was performed prior to removal of external fixation in 65 patients with severe tibia fractures. Using thresholds selected for 100% sensitivity and 100% negative predictive value, VST identified 43 of 56 patients who progressed to uneventful union (77% specificity). These results suggest that VST may provide quantitative means for identifying tibia-fracture patients who can safely resume weight bearing.
