Donald Gilbert, MD, MS

Donald Gilbert, MD, MS, is Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Gilbert earned his medical degree and a Master of Science in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan. He then completed residency training in child neurology at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Gilbert founded the Movement Disorders and Tourette Syndrome Clinics and the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Lab. His clinical expertise includes the evaluation and pharmacologic treatment of children and adolescents with tics, chorea, tremor, dystonia, stereotypies, ataxia, and other movement disorders. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, industry, and various foundations. He has published over 150 articles, focusing on movement disorders and child neurology education and workforce issues.

Dr. Gilbert served as child neurology residency program director in Cincinnati for 11 years, garnering the American Academy of Neurology’s Residency Program Director Recognition Award and ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award. He currently serves as an associate director in the Medical Scientist Training Program and on the diversity, equity, and inclusion mentoring subcommittee for the Advancing Inclusion in Medical Education program at the University of Cincinnati. His roles in national organizations include Vice Chair and Chair of the American Academy of Neurology Child Neurology Section, Secretary-Treasurer of the Professors & Educators of Child Neurology, Councilor for the Child Neurology Society, and Section on Neurology Executive Committee member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
