Alcohol and Addiction Studies 4.0 (Articles published in 2023 and 2024)

Alcohol and addiction-related problems have become increasingly diverse, affecting not only adults but also children, adolescents, females, and elderly populations. These issues often involve an overlap between addictive substances and behaviors, highlighting the complexity of addiction. At the same time, psychedelics have gained attention for their potential therapeutic effects on mental health conditions such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other psychiatric disorders. The development of standardized scales to evaluate the effects of psychedelics is essential for advancing this field of research.

This virtual issue presents recent advances in alcohol and addiction research, offering insights into the multifaceted nature of addiction and the evolving therapeutic potential of psychedelics.

Alcohol and Addiction Studies 3.0

The Japanese Medical Society of Alcohol and Addiction Studies acknowledged the Neuropsychopharmacology Reports as its Associate Journal. In commemoration of the agreement, this special issue devotes to publishing original research, scholarly reviews, commentaries, and policy analyses in the research area of alcohol and addiction. Articles range from studies of the molecular, cellular, and behavioral investigations of addictive substances and behaviors, laboratory-based and clinical research in humans, treatment and prevention research, and studies employing methods from epidemiology, sociology, and economics. The special issue facilitates the sharing of knowledge and new discoveries among scientists of diverse backgrounds.

Alcohol and Addiction Studies 2.0 (Articles published in 2020-2022)

Health and social problems due to addictive substance use, including alcohol and addictive behaviors have become various and serious recently. The opioid crisis in the United States is worsening under the COVID-19 pandemic and gaming disorders are classified as diseases in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 11th edition (ICD-11). The range of substances and behaviors that should be treated as addiction disorders is expanding.

Alcohol and Addiction Studies 1.0 (Articles published in 2018-2019)

Use of alcohol or other addictive substances has both immediate and long-term effects which increase the risk of many harmful health conditions, such as neurodevelopmental disorders, dependence, liver disease, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, weakening of the immune system, learning and memory difficulties, and mental health problems. It also causes social challenges, including family problems, job-related issues, and criminal activity. Addictive behaviors, such as gambling and gaming, also have effects which increase the risk of health and social issues.
