Overview

Aims and Scope

Nursing Open is a peer reviewed open access journal that welcomes articles on all aspects of nursing and midwifery practice, research, education and policy. We aim to publish articles that contribute to the art and science of nursing and which have a positive impact on health either locally, nationally, regionally or globally. As such the following qualities are essential in any article published by the journal: scientific credibility and rigour, and coherence and clarity in the writing. Contributions do not need to be novel as confirmatory and replication studies will be considered, however the article must present new findings, which could include the reporting of negative findings.

Peer-Review Policy

Nursing Open maintains the highest standards of peer review while increasing the efficiency of the process. All research articles published in the journal will undergo full double-blind peer review. Key characteristics of the journal’s review process are:

  • All manuscripts are screened by the Editor for their suitability for publication in Nursing Open on the basis of the Aims and Scope.
  • Manuscripts are checked for their similarity to other sources (using iThenticate). Those showing substantial similarity to other sources will be referred to the Editor.
  • Manuscripts are then assigned to an Associate Editor. Submissions transferred to Nursing Open from partnering journals will be assessed using the original peer-review reports from those journals, if available; however, the Associate Editor will critically review these peer-review reports and may choose to send manuscripts out for additional double-blind review.
  • All manuscripts submitted directly to the Journal are double-blind peer reviewed. Where appropriate, a statistician will review papers with statistical content.
  • When the reviews are returned, the Associate Editor assigned to the paper reads the paper again and identifies any further modifications needed.
  • Before acceptance, the Editor carries out a further assessment of the paper and makes the final decision.
  • Members of the editorial board lend insight, advice and guidance to the Editor and Associate Editors generally and may assist in decision making on specific submissions.
  • The editorial assistant provides administrative support to ensure Nursing Open maintains the integrity of peer review and delivers rapid and efficient publication to authors and reviewers.

Referred Papers

In addition to manuscripts submitted directly to the journal, Nursing Open will also consider manuscripts referred from other Wiley journals that are participating in the Manuscript Transfer Program. As part of our commitment to speed of publication, and in order to reduce strain on the peer-review system, we have set up a mechanism to allow a select group of prestigious partner journals to refer high-quality manuscripts to Nursing Open along with any existing peer-review reports, when these journals are not themselves able to accommodate the manuscripts (for example, on grounds of scope or space). For manuscripts that have existing peer-review reports, the Editor is able to decide whether or not a manuscript is suitable for publication particularly quickly.
