Author Guidelines

Archaeometry is an international research journal covering the application of the physical and biological sciences to archaeology, anthropology and the history of art. The topics covered include dating methods, artifact studies, mathematical methods, remote sensing techniques, conservation science, environmental reconstruction, biological anthropology and archaeological theory. Papers are expected to have a clear archaeological, anthropological or art historical context, be of the highest scientific standards, and to present data of international relevance.

Submission of manuscripts

Important Information

  • Save your manuscript as a Word or LaTex (using the NJD LaTex template) file. Graphics can be uploaded separately in any popular format, including tiff, EPS and Excel.
  • Word Limit: the journal enforces a word limit on all papers. The text which must include Title, Authors, Abstract, Keywords, text, references and Table and Figure captions should be a maximum of 8,000 words.
  • Notes and footnotes should be avoided.
  • Review articles surveying recent developments in a field are normally commissioned, but suggestions in the form of a one-page synopsis are welcome.

Images

Only 6 figures or small tables may be submitted for the paper version of the journal, however all figures and tables will be included in the online version. Please indicate which figures should be used in the print version and which in the online version (either by including this information in the ‘Cover Letter/Comment’ section or by adding ‘online only’ to the file name).

Before you submit, please ensure that you have checked over the following:

  • All figures are included as separate files or in a single PDF/Word document/LaTeX suite. Separate, original files in their original file format are preferred. Each figure should have an accompanying caption describing the content and explaining any abbreviations or symbols. Figure captions should be included as a separate section in the main text file.
  • All figures are cited in the main text of the article and numbered in the order in which they appear. All words or symbols in the figures are large enough for easy reading and you have followed the preferred resolution guidelines for the best presentation.
  • Figures are saved in the preferred file types for best image quality. You may submit a PDF for initial review if in doubt.
  • Each individual figure file is less than 10 MB, with unnecessary white space removed to reduce file size.
  • Figures are created at a size between 80mm and 180mm in width and between 300dpi and 600dpi. Each figure file is named with its appropriate figure number (and if applicable ‘online only’).

If you are unsure of how to prepare your images, see Wiley’s Guidelines for the preparation of figures.

Publication Ethics

This journal follows the core practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and handles cases of research and publication misconduct accordingly (https://publicationethics.org/core-practices)

Note this journal uses CrossRef’s Similarity Check software powered by iThenticate to detect instances of overlapping and similar text in published articles and works. See Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines on Research Integrity and Publishing Ethics for more information.

Peer Review

This journal is participating in Transparent Peer Review initiative. By submitting to this journal, authors agree that the reviewer reports, their responses, and the editor’s decision letter will be linked from the published article to where they appear on Publons in the case that the article is accepted. Authors have the opportunity to opt out during submission, and reviewers may remain anonymous unless they would like to sign their report.

Symbols and units

The conventions for abbreviations of units and symbols are those recommended by the British Standards Institution (leaflet B.S. 5775).

Abstract/keywords

Abstracts should be suitable for separate publication and should not exceed 100 words. Keywords (up to a maximum of 10) should cover, as appropriate, geographical region, period, scientific techniques used, object type, material or species and information sought.

References

Use the APA style of referencing, citing in the text author's name, date of publication, and any specific page references, and give the full reference (including full page references of an article) in an alphabetical list of authors at the end of the article.

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp

Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp

Offprints

A PDF offprint will be provided to each contributor. Printed offprints may be purchased from the publisher according to a scale of charges.

Data Policy

Archaeometry requires, as a condition for publication, that the data supporting the results in the paper will be published with the article or archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement, including a link to the repository if they have used one, and to cite the data they have shared. Exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the editor. If authors are unable to share data (for example, if sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements) then authors are not required to share it and must describe restrictions in their data availability statement and include any reasons for these restrictions in the ‘Cover Letter/Comment’ section.
