1. Scope of submissions
We publish research papers on current practical issues in all areas of applied economics. Emphasis is placed on the practical importance, theoretical interest and policy-relevance of results, as well as on the methodology and technical competence of the research.
Contributions on topical issues of economic policy and the testing of currently controversial economic theories are encouraged, as well as empirical research on both developed and developing countries.
We also publish papers on formal econometric techniques, including theoretical analysis, developing new techniques in estimation and testing, and simulation studies.
Normally, submissions below 10,000 words are favoured and submissions (inclusive of footnotes, references and tables) should not exceed 12,500 words. Note that figures and tables count towards the word limit for the space they take up in the published article. Each half-page figure or table is equivalent to 250 words; a full-page figure or table to 500 words.Smaller practical contributions can be considered for the Practitioner Papers section of the journal. Examples of such contributions include small-scale simulations illustrating the efficacy of existing estimators, new proposals for estimators for particular problems (see for example, Roodman, D. (2009). ‘A note on the theme of too many instruments’, Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, Vol. 71, pp. 135-158 https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1468-0084.2008.00542.x) or any focused analysis likely to be of benefit to practitioners.
We are introducing two innovations:
- A ‘Short Papers’ section. Contributions not exceeding 6000 words (calculated as above) may be submitted for consideration by the editors;
- We will also consider articles with reports which may have been rejected by another journal (or by other journals.) If authors wish the Bulletin to consider existing reports, they should submit the full set(s) of reports (including reports on any revisions) as well as decision letters from editors. Detailed responses to the editorial and referee comments should also be concluded. The Bulletin may accept or reject the paper without further refereeing or send it out for additional review.
2. Submission instructions
The Oxford Bulletin of Economics & Statistics now offers Free Format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.
Before you submit, you will need:
- Your manuscript: this should be an editable file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer – and each file should be less than 6Mb in size. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including the abstract. Figures and tables should have legends. Figures should be uploaded in the highest resolution possible. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. Supporting information should be submitted in separate files. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers, and the editorial office will send it back to you for revision. Your manuscript may also be sent back to you for revision if the quality of English language is poor.
- The title page of the manuscript, including:
- Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
- Statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies, which may include any of the following (Why are these important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication):
- data availability statement
- funding statement
- conflict of interest disclosure
- ethics approval statement
- permission to reproduce material from other sources
(a) It is not necessary to prepare your manuscript according to style guidelines at the time of submission of your paper. It will be sufficient in the first instance to provide the information given in 2(d) below in the format requested. Once your manuscript is accepted for publication, the guidelines in 3. below should be rigorously implemented. Manuscripts should be submitted online through ScholarOne at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/obes. This journal does not charge submission fees.
(b) If this is the first time that you have used the system you will be asked to register by clicking on 'Create Account'. Full instructions on making a submission are provided on the site. You will be able to submit or upload your complete manuscript in most standard processing software.
(c) Preprint policy: Please find the Wiley preprint policy here. The Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics will consider for review articles previously available as preprints. You are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article. You may also post the final published version of the article immediately after publication.
Authors are responsible for anonymizing their manuscript in order to remain anonymous to the reviewers throughout the peer review process (see “title page” below for more details). Since the journal also encourages posting of preprints, however, please note that if authors share their manuscript in preprint form this may compromise their anonymity during peer review.
(d) You are requested to submit the title page and the manuscript in separate documents.
The title page should include:
- Title
- The full names of the authors
- The authors' institutional affiliations at which the work was carried out, (footnote if an author’s present address is different to where the work was carried out)
- The full contact details of the corresponding author (address, email and telephone)
- Abstract
- Keywords
- JEL classification numbers
- Word count
- Details of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s)
- Acknowledgements
Title
The title should be a short informative title that contains the major keywords. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice SEO tips).
Abstract
Please provide a summary of no more than 100 words. A summary is a condensation of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
Keywords
Please provide up to six keywords.
(e) As part of the submission process, any uploaded files will be converted into journal specific PDF and HTML versions (with covering page) which you will be required to open and check before submitting. Once submitted, you will receive an acknowledgement within a few minutes. Thereafter you can log in to the system to keep abreast of the status of your paper throughout the review process, through to revisions and the final decision.
3. Style guidelines
Full details of the style authors should follow when preparing an accepted article for publication can be found here.
As far as possible, the main text should be anonymised, although it is not necessary to blind references to articles written by the authors.
Please note that the main text should be divided reasonably into sections and, if necessary, into subsections.
All equations should be numbered consecutively, and the numbers should be placed in parentheses in the right hand margin.
The text should be typed double-spaced in 12 point font. A word count must be provided and marked clearly on the title page of author manuscripts.
4. Supplementary material
The editors will consider supplementary materials and encourage authors to place non-essential figures or tables in such supplementary appendices. These materials will be included in the journal webpage, but not in the print edition of the journal, with readers alerted to their online availability in a footnote. Should you have any questions about supplementary materials please contact the editorial office.5. Publication process after acceptance
Once the paper is typeset, the corresponding author will receive an email notification with full instructions on how to provide proof corrections.
Please note that you are responsible for all statements made in your work, including changes made during the editorial process and thus you must check your proofs carefully. Note that proofs should be returned within 48 hours from receipt of first proof.
Alterations must be kept down to a very low level and the publisher reserves the right to veto and/or charge for alterations made in proof.
Colour figures
Colour figures may be published online free of charge; however, the journal charges for publishing figures in colour in print. Upon submission of colour figures, you will be sent a Colour Work Agreement once the accepted paper moves to the production process. If the Colour Work Agreement is not returned by the specified date, figures will be converted to black and white for print publication.
6. License agreements
If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.
For authors signing the copyright transfer agreement
If the open access option is not selected the corresponding author will be presented with the copyright transfer agreement (CTA) to sign. The terms and conditions of the CTA can be previewed in the samples associated with the Copyright FAQs below:
CTA Terms and Conditions: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/faqs_copyright.asp
For authors choosing open access
If the open access option is selected the corresponding author will have a choice of the following Creative Commons License Open Access Agreements (OAA):
- Creative Commons Attribution License OAA
- Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License OAA

(a) PDF offprints retrieval via Author Services
Free access to the final PDF offprint of your article will be available via Author Services only. Please therefore sign up for Author Services if you would like to access your article PDF offprint and enjoy the many other benefits the service offers.
(b) Online production tracking is available for your article through Wiley Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article – once it has been accepted – through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production. The author will receive an email with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete email address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Click here for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
(c) Early access
The Bulletin publishes fully peer-reviewed, corrected articles ahead of issue publication, enabling readers to access information faster. This service is known as “Early View”. This service presents full-text, peer-reviewed, copy-edited articles as soon as they are complete, before the release of the compiled print issue. Articles are posted following receipt of the authors' corrected proofs. They include all figures and tables and are fully citable. Since Early View articles are fully integrated within the Wiley Online Library platform, they may be retrieved using the search and browse functions, delivered to your desktop via email alerts, and viewed at the journal's home page. Each Early View article carries an online publication date and a DOI for citations.
(d) Wiley’s author name change policy
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
(e) Correction to authorship
In accordance with Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines on Research Integrity and Publishing Ethics and the Committee on Publication Ethics’ guidance, The Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics will allow authors to correct authorship on a submitted, accepted, or published article if a valid reason exists to do so. All authors – including those to be added or removed – must agree to any proposed change. To request a change to the author list, please complete the Request for Changes to a Journal Article Author List Form and contact either the journal’s editorial or production office, depending on the status of the article. Authorship changes will not be considered without a fully completed Author Change form. Correcting the authorship is different from changing an author’s name; the relevant policy for that can be found in Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines under “Author name changes after publication.”
