Author Guidelines
Sections
This journal participates in the Wiley Social and Personality Psychology Publishing Network. This exciting collaboration between a number of high quality journals simplifies and speeds up the publication process, helping authors find a home for their research. At the Editors' judgement, suitable papers not accepted by one journal may be recommended for referral to another journal(s) in the network. Authors decide whether to accept the referral offer, with the option to transfer their paper with or without revisions. Once the referral is accepted, submission happens automatically, along with any previous reviewer reports (if applicable), thereby relieving pressure on the peer review process. While a transfer does not guarantee acceptance, it is more likely to lead to a successful outcome for authors by helping them to find a route to publication quickly and easily.
1. Submission and Peer Review Process
Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online at https://wiley.atyponrex.com/journal/jopy. For help with submissions, please review our FAQs or contact [email protected].
New submissions should be made via the Wiley Authors submission portal https://submission.wiley.com/journal/jopy. Please note that if you are submitting a revised paper or were invited to submit a paper, you should submit through https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jopy.
For help with article preparation Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, and figure preparation.
Free format submission
While the editorial office prefers that authors follow APA style for initial submissions, the Journal of Personality now offers free format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.
Before you submit, you will need:
- Your manuscript: this can be a single file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Figures and tables should have legends. References must be cited in the text with the author(s) and year of publication but any style following that format is acceptable. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers. Please ensure that your abstract includes the methods and sample size and is no longer than 200 words; if not, the editorial office may send it back to you for revision.
- The title page of the manuscript, including statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies (see information on these policies below in Section 1):
- data availability statement
- funding statement
- conflict of interest disclosure
- ethics approval statement
- permission to reproduce material from other sources
The maximum page limit is set at 36 double-spaced pages. Any submissions that exceed this limit must provide a justification, which may include multiple experiments or intricate methodologies, and will be subject to the editor's review. Additionally, manuscripts should not surpass a total of 46 double-spaced pages.
If you are invited to revise your manuscript after peer review, the Journal of Personality will also request the revised manuscript to be formatted according to journal requirements as described below.
Transparency and Open Science Requirements and Guidelines
The Journal of Personality has adopted procedures for openness and transparency consistent with the Transparency and Open Science Promotion (TOP) Guidelines. Authors are encouraged to review the journal's policy statement. Authors will be required to confirm that their manuscript complies with JP’s TOP Author Guidelines before submission. To support compliance, authors must upload a completed JP TOP Guidelines Checklist when submitting their manuscript. Manuscripts that do not comply will be unsubmitted.
JP has adopted Level 2 implementation across the first seven standards (citation, data, methods, materials transparency, design transparency, and preregistration of studies and analysis plans) and Level 3 implementation for replication. To prepare authors to complete the TOP Guideline Checklist, the standards are below:
1 Citation Standards (Level 2)
All data, program code and other methods should be appropriately cited. Such materials should be recognized as original intellectual contributions and afforded recognition through citation.
- All data, program code and other methods must be appropriately cited. Such materials are recognized as original intellectual contributions and afforded recognition through citation.
- References for data sets and program code must include a persistent identifier, such as a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). Persistent identifiers ensure future access to unique published digital objects, such as a text or data set. Persistent identifiers are assigned to data sets by digital archives, such as institutional repositories and partners in the Data Preservation Alliance for the Social Sciences (Data-PASS).

2, 3, 4 Data, Analytic Methods (Code), and Research Materials Transparency (Level 2)
The policy of Journal of Personality is to publish papers only if the data, methods used in the analysis, and materials used to conduct the research are clearly and precisely documented and are maximally available to any researcher for purposes of reproducing the results or replicating the procedure.
- Authors reusing data available from public repositories must provide program code, scripts for statistical packages, and other documentation sufficient to allow an informed researcher to precisely reproduce all published results.
- Authors using original data must:
- make the data available at a trusted digital repository (Note: If all data required to reproduce the reported analyses appears in the article text, tables, and figures then it does not also need to be posted to a repository.)
- include all variables, treatment conditions, and observations described in the manuscript
- provide a full account of the procedures used to collect, preprocess, clean, or generate the data
- provide program code, scripts, codebooks, and other documentation sufficient to precisely reproduce all published results
- provide research materials and description of procedures necessary to conduct an independent replication of the research
- In rare cases, despite authors’ best efforts, some or all data or materials cannot be shared for legal or ethical reasons. In such cases, authors must inform the editors at the time of submission. This will be taken into account during the review process. Authors are encouraged to anticipate data and material sharing at the beginning of their projects to provide for these circumstances. It is understood that in some cases access will be provided under restrictions to protect confidential or proprietary information. Editors may grant exceptions to data and material access requirements provided authors:
- explain the restrictions on the dataset or materials and how they preclude public access.
- provide a public description of the steps others should follow to request access to the data or materials.
- provide software and other documentation that will precisely reproduce all published results.
- provide access to all data and materials for which the constraints do not apply.
- Data, program code, research materials, and other documentation of the research process should be made available through a trusted digital repository. Trusted repositories adhere to policies that make data discoverable, accessible, usable, and preserved for the long term. Trusted repositories also assign unique and persistent identifiers. For example these services are offered by partners in the Data Preservation Alliance for the Social Sciences (Data-PASS) and most institutional repositories. Author maintained websites are not compliant with this requirement.
- Dissemination of these materials may be delayed until publication. Under exceptional circumstances, editors may grant an embargo of the public release of data for at most one year after publication.
- Articles accepted for publication will not be assigned a publication date until the above conditions have been met. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their articles continue to meet these conditions. Failure to do so may lead to an editorial expression of concern or retraction of the article.
5 Design and Analysis Transparency (Level 2)
The policy of Journal of Personality is to publish papers where authors follow standards for disclosing key aspects of the research design and data analysis. Authors are required to review the standards available for many research applications from http://www.equator-network.org/ and use those that are relevant for the reported research applications. At manuscript submission, authors must confirm that they reviewed the standards, report whether any standards were relevant for the research application, and confirm that they followed those standards in the manuscript.
6 Preregistration of Studies (Level 2)
The policy of Journal of Personality is to publish papers where authors indicate whether the conducted research was preregistered in an independent, institutional registry (e.g., http://clinicaltrials.gov/, http://socialscienceregistry.org/, http://osf.io/, http://egap.org/design-registration/, http://ridie.3ieimpact.org/). Preregistration of studies involves registering the study design, variables, and treatment conditions prior to conducting the research. A link to the preregistration in an institutional registry must be made available to the journal prior to publication. The journal, or an entity acting on behalf of the journal, will verify that preregistration adheres to the specifications for preregistration and then provide certification of the preregistration in the article.
7 Preregistration of Analysis Plans (Level 2)
The policy of Journal of Personality is to publish papers where authors indicate whether or not the conducted research was preregistered with an analysis plan in an independent, institutional registry (e.g., http://clinicaltrials.gov/, http://socialscienceregistry.org/, http://osf.io/, http://egap.org/design-registration/, http://ridie.3ieimpact.org/). Preregistration of studies involves registering the study design, variables, and treatment conditions. Including an analysis plan involves specification of sequence of analyses or the statistical model that will be reported. A link to the preregistration in an institutional registry must be made available to the journal prior to publication. The journal, or an entity acting on behalf of the journal, will verify that preregistration adheres to the specifications for preregistration and then provide certification of the preregistration in the article.
8 Replication (Level 3)
The policy of Journal of Personality is to encourage submission of replication studies, particularly of research published in this journal. When possible, replication studies are reviewed in two stages following the Registered Reports format. In particular, the first stage of review is conducted prior to the data being collected or, for existing datasets, before the outcomes are observed:
- On initial submission, authors should:
- Denote in the cover letter that the manuscript is a Registered Report submission and confirm that the data do not exist, or that the outcomes have not been observed
- Include a full manuscript for the abstract, introduction, and methods without the results and discussion sections.
- The methods must contain a complete analysis plan of what is to be included in the full article.
- If the submission passes initial review, then the authors will receive an in-principle acceptance prior to data collection or analysis of the outcomes.
- For the second stage of review, authors submit a complete manuscript. Reviewers assess the extent to which the authors followed the preregistered design and/or analysis plan, and evaluate non-outcome relevant criteria (e.g., manipulation checks) to confirm whether the research was an effective test of the research question.

Author Name Change Policy
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
Author Pronouns
Authors may now include their personal pronouns in the author bylines of their published articles and on Wiley Online Library. Authors will never be required to include their pronouns; it will always be optional for the author. Authors can include their pronouns in their manuscript upon submission and can add, edit, or remove their pronouns at any stage upon request. Submitting/corresponding authors should never add, edit, or remove a coauthor’s pronouns without that coauthor’s consent. Where post-publication changes to pronouns are required, these can be made without a correction notice to the paper, following Wiley’s Name Change Policy to protect the author’s privacy. Terms which fall outside of the scope of personal pronouns, e.g. proper or improper nouns, are currently not supported.
