Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia: past, present and future
Submission deadline: Friday, 31 October 2025
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common and severe complication associated with prematurity. Also known as chronic lung disease (CLD), BPD results from the disruption of normal alveolar and vascular tissue development due to prolonged exposure to supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, inflammation, and various antenatal and postnatal factors. The related mortality and morbidity extend beyond the neonatal period, significantly affecting long-term pulmonary, cardiovascular, and neurodevelopmental health while also imposing social and economic burdens.
The incidence of BPD has increased over the past few decades, likely due to improved survival rates among high-risk infants. However, the evolving definitions of BPD and the lack of a standardized approach to respiratory support complicate the interpretation of past data, leading to considerable variability among different healthcare networks. While the routine administration of antenatal steroids for at-risk infants and the use of surfactants for respiratory distress have significantly improved survival rates, these advancements have not yet resulted in a reduction in the incidence of BPD.
We invite quantitative and qualitative research papers exploring various topics to enhance knowledge, prevention, management, and advancements related to BPD, encompassing medical, nursing, parenteral, and allied health perspectives.
Topics for this call for papers include but are not restricted to:
- Pathogenesis, pathophysiology, and pathological features of BPD
- Neurosensory, respiratory, and other outcomes of BPD
- Preventative strategies for BPD
- Ventilation strategies for BPD
- Management of BPD
- Role of postnatal steroids and their side effects
- Prediction and prognostication of BPD
- Review of definitions and severity scoring tools
- Transition to home care and out-of-hospital management
- Potential pitfalls and areas for debate regarding BPD
