1. Submission and Peer Review Process
Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online through the Research Exchange platform.
This journal does not charge submission fees.
Article Preparation Support
Wiley Editing Services offers expert help with English Language Editing, as well as translation, manuscript formatting, figure illustration, figure formatting, and graphical abstract design – so you can submit your manuscript with confidence.
Also, check out our resources for Preparing Your Article for general guidance about writing and preparing your manuscript.
New submissions should be made via the Research Exchange submission portal. For technical help with the submission system, please review our FAQs or contact [email protected].
Free format submission
Permafrost and Periglacial Processes now offers Free Format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process.
Before you submit, you will need:
- Your manuscript: this should be an editable file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files—whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Figures and tables should have legends. Figures can be uploaded in your preferred format, or as part of the manuscript itself. They must be legible for reviewers and editors. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. Supporting information should be submitted in separate files. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers, and the editorial office will send it back to you for revision. Your manuscript may also be sent back to you for revision if the quality of English language is poor.
- An ORCID ID, freely available at https://orcid.org. (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasingly requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)
- The title page of the manuscript, including:
- Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
- Statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies, which may include any of the following (Why are these important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication):
- data availability statement
- funding statement
- conflict of interest disclosure
- ethics approval statement
- patient consent statement
- permission to reproduce material from other sources
- clinical trial registration
Authors are encouraged to provide a cover letter for their submission.
Please note that authors are encouraged to submit their figures as part of their main document. If you wish to provide your figures separately, JPEG and PNG formats are welcome.
To submit, login at http://submission.wiley.com/journal/ppp and create a new submission. Follow the submission steps as required and submit the manuscript.
Open Access
You’ll have the option to choose to make your article open access after acceptance, which will be subject to an APC. For more information on this journal’s APCs, please see the Open Access page. You can read more about APCs and whether you may be eligible for waivers or discounts, through your institution, funder, or a country waiver.

Reference Style
This journal uses AMA reference style; as the journal offers Free Format submission, however, this is for information only and you do not need to format the references in your article. This will instead be taken care of by the typesetter.
Figures and Supporting Information
Figures, supporting information, and appendices should be supplied as separate files. You should review the basic figure requirements for manuscripts for peer review, as well as the more detailed post-acceptance figure requirements. View Wiley’s FAQs on supporting information.
Units of Measurement
The units in the labels of the figures should be enclosed in rounded parenthesis. For example; Radiation (Wm-2) or Ground Temperature (°C)
Peer Review
This journal operates under a single-blind peer review model. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editor-in-Chief determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements.
In-house submissions, i.e. papers authored by Editors or Editorial Board members of the title, will be sent to Editors unaffiliated with the author or institution and monitored carefully to ensure there is no peer review bias.
Wiley's policy on the confidentiality of the review process is available here.
This journal participates in Wiley’s Transfer Desk Assistant program.
Guidelines on Publishing and Research Ethics in Journal Articles
The journal requires that you include in the manuscript details IRB approvals, ethical treatment of human and animal research participants, and gathering of informed consent, as appropriate. You will be expected to declare all conflicts of interest, or none, on submission. Please review Wiley’s policies surrounding human studies, animal studies, clinical trial registration, biosecurity, and research reporting guidelines.
This journal follows the core practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and handles cases of research and publication misconduct accordingly (https://publicationethics.org/core-practices).
This journal uses iThenticate’s CrossCheck software to detect instances of overlapping and similar text in submitted manuscripts. Read Wiley’s Top 10 Publishing Ethics Tips for Authors and Wiley’s Publication Ethics Guidelines.2. Article Types
Permafrost and Periglacial Processes publishes papers, Technical notes, data papers, short communications, reviews, discussions, monographs and book reviews in English.
Please note: Editors reserve the right to reject papers without external review if i) the paper is not within the scope of the Journal; ii) the English of the paper is not of a high enough standard; or iii) if the length or format of the submission does not meet the Journal’s requirements.
For the latest editorial advice please read What makes a good paper for PPP? by the former Editor, Professor J.B.Murton.
- Papers - are reports of varying lengths that describe the results of original research. The normal length limit is 30 double-spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages including figures and tables. Papers are subject to peer review, with originality and excellence as the main criteria for acceptance.
- Technical note- to present technical analyses that are related to the journal’s topical areas. Technical notes present analyses based on data, simulations, or a combination of both. Contributions will have a maximum length of 10 double spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages and will be subject to peer-review. The following components should be included in a Technical note:
- The theoretical underpinning of the analysis presented in the paper, potentially including a description of the relevant physical processes and related governing principles or equations.
- For analysis based on field or experimental data, a complete description of the method(s) used to create the data, including instruments, accuracies of the instruments, setting of the instruments, proprietary software or other research-critical equipment, and assessment of uncertainty associated with the data.
- For analysis based on field data, a description of the field site where the data was collected.
- For analysis based on simulations or numerical methodologies, a complete description of the simulation model or methods and a description of the procedure used to ensure that the model accurately captures the relevant physical processes.
- A quantitative error analysis that places error bounds on the final results presented in the paper. For papers based on numerical simulations, this should include an analysis of the impact of the numerical resolution. For papers based on field or experimental data, this should include an analysis of the impact that the measurement uncertainty has on the final results.
- Data Paper- to alert the scientific community to the existence of data sets and data bases that could be used in further geomorphological, physical, ecological or multi-disciplinary collaborative research. Contributions will have a maximum length of 10 double-spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages and will be subject to peer-review. Only data sets of continuous measurements of at least 5 years of continuous data or noncontinuous data sets that cover at least a period of 10 years will be considered. The major results should be also included (with a maximum of 5 figures and or tables) but without any discussion or interpretation. The following components should be included in a Data Paper:
- The official title of the data set/data base
- A listing of all contributors to the creation of the data set/data base, a statement of the funding origins and ownership of the data set/data base, together with any licensing or embargo restrictions
- A description of the data, and a description of the study site at which the data was obtained (Metadata)
- A description of the method(s) used to create the data, including instruments, accuracies of the instruments, setting of the instruments, proprietary software or other research-critical equipment, and assessment of uncertainty associated with the data.
- A statement of the contribution that the data makes to an improved understanding of permafrost or periglacial processes, including citations to publications that have used it, and an outline of the range of applications that the data may have in permafrost and periglacial relates topics.
- Details about how the data may be accessed (including landing page URL, DOI or other identifier), and the means to access any software that might be needed in order to access and process the data to convert them to a usable form.
- Short Communications - are short reports on methodology, technique or instrumentation, that do not require lengthy accounts of background and principles. They will undergo the normal review process. The normal length limit is 15 double-spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages, including figures and tables.
- Review Articles - are state-of-the-art summaries of areas of permafrost science or engineering. The normal length limit is 30 double-spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages including figures and tables. Review articles are subject to the normal PPP refereeing system, with synthesis, completeness and timeliness as the main criteria for acceptance.
- Discussions - of articles published in recent issues of Permafrost and Periglacial Procsses may be accepted for publication if they are brief and of a technical or interpretative nature. Replies to such discussions are invited from the original authors and are generally published in the same issue.
- Monographs - are authoritative and benchmark studies that provide seminal contributions to understanding permafrost and periglacial processes and engineering endeavours. They allow a topic to be considered in greater depth than is possible in a standard research article, and reflect on research over an extended period of time or through multidisciplinary collaboration. Monographs will occasionally be published in place of a standard issue of PPP, when there is no special issue in the same year. The submission and reviewing process for monographs will be the same as for research articles. Authors who wish to submit a monograph to PPP must provide the editors with an abstract, outline structure and statement about the scientific significance of the monograph for approval prior to submission. Submissions will be peer reviewed and considered in the same way as a research article.
- Book Reviews - are critical assessments of major recent publications in the permafrost and periglacial literature. The normal length limit is 5 double-spaced word-processed A4 (or US letter) pages.
- Comments and Replies - A Comment on an article published in PPP must be submitted within two years of the article’s publication in print. Comments should focus on either important implications or spinoffs of the research or identify serious problems or inadequacies with it. Comments should not exceed three printed pages in length (3000 words). Comments will be treated in the same way as articles and therefore could be sent out for review by experts in the field before an editorial decision is made regarding their suitability for publication. If the Comment is accepted for publication, the author(s) of the original article will then be given up to three weeks to submit a Reply to the Comment. The Reply, too, may be sent out for review, to ensure that it also merits publication. After a potential review is complete, the authors will have a limit of one week to revise and resubmit the Reply. Final decisions about the suitability of Comments and Replies for publication will be made by the editors on the basis of referees’ comments (if available) and significance to the readership.

Author Name Change Policy
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
Correction to Authorship
In accordance with Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines on Research Integrity and Publishing Ethics and the Committee on Publication Ethics’ guidance, Permafrost and Periglacial Processes will allow authors to correct authorship on a submitted, accepted, or published article if a valid reason exists to do so. All authors – including those to be added or removed – must agree to any proposed change. To request a change to the author list, please complete the Request for Changes to a Journal Article Author List Form and contact either the journal’s editorial or production office, depending on the status of the article. Authorship changes will not be considered without a fully completed Author Change form. [Correcting the authorship is different from changing an author’s name; the relevant policy for that can be found in Wiley’s Best Practice Guidelines under “Author name changes after publication.”]
