Materials with structure at the nanoscale have unique properties. Nanoscience and nanotechnology concepts are applicable across all fields of science (materials science and engineering as well as chemistry, biology, and physics). It is well known that nanoscience and nanotechnology have huge potential in many fields.

A more widespread application of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies is imminent or already occurring in many areas, including health care. For nanomedicine, the three largest areas of application seem to be diagnostics, drug delivery, and regenerative medicine. The use of nanotechnology in dental materials is not new because nanosized silica fillers for dental composite resins were already developed in 1978. What is new is the understanding of some of the benefits that nanoscale technology can offer. Today's scientists and research workers take those new technologies and concepts and apply them to medicine and dentistry. They are finding a wide variety of ways to make medical and dental materials at the nanoscale to take advantage of their enhanced strength and greater bioreactivity.

The purpose of this special issue is to publish high-quality research papers as well as review articles addressing recent advances in the field of nanomaterials for medical and dental applications. A particular interest will be given to papers exploring or discussing nanomaterials and nanotechnologies related to bone cements, bond substitutes, dental composite resins, dental implants, and surface modification techniques applicable in these areas.
