As the field of autonomous driving develops, new requirements are emerging, such as being seamless, secure, and robust, as well as scalable information exchange among vehicles, humans, and roadside infrastructures of vehicular networks. The original concept of vehicular ad-hoc networks is being transformed into a new concept called the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), which has emerged with the capability of intelligence and communication to enable advanced autonomous driving.
On one hand, the IoV is given the mission to tackle the autonomous driving tasks by employing Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, which require high computational power and huge amounts of data. On the other hands, the IoV draws support from newly emerging 5G mobile communication technology, which is capable of uRLLC, eMBB, and mMTC by incorporating techniques such as Massive MIMO, network virtualization and edge computing, etc. Enabling the complex AI algorithms on edge infrastructure has become a promising roadmap for IoV, thus brewing out edge intelligence (EI). The emergence of EI solves not only the performance degrading problem caused by on-board AI algorithms computation, but also the unexpected transmission delay resulting from cloud datacenters.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to present and discuss major research challenges, latest developments, and recent advances on edge intelligence for IoV. This Special Issue solicits the submission of high-quality papers from academia and industry that aim to solve open technical problems or challenges in the context of edge intelligence for IoV.
