Description

Aging of the population is a major health issue in developed countries. Some refer to this observation as “Silver Tsunami.” Many diseases, such as cancer, increase with age.

As the management of elderly cancer patients remains controversial due to comorbidity issues, the overall complexity of cancer management in this setting increases. Lack of clinical data hampers management issues such as treatment tolerance or prognosis which prompts us to dedicate a special issue on management of elderly cancer patients. Several important questions can be raised related to the same treatment course and protocols as used in younger patients, the treatment tolerance issues, or the expected prognosis, among others.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Surgical treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • External Beam Radiotherapy treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • Brachytherapy treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • Chemotherapy treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • New agents treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • Hormonal treatment of cancer in elderly patients
  • Financial resources in oncology for elderly patients
  • Economic implications for future of oncology
  • Variation in the tolerance of treatment in elderly patients
  • Variation in the indications of treatment in elderly patients
  • Oncologic prognostic factors in elderly patients
  • Biomarkers predictive to tumor response or treatment toxicity in elderly patients
  • Quality of life in elderly patients with cancer
  • Immunotherapy and immunomodulating agent for elderly cancer patients
  • Molecular and cellular image—guided treatment for elderly cancer patients
