Summary

This is the introductory chapter of 3DTV: Processing and Transmission of 3D Video Signals. The chapter discusses the history of 3-dimensional (3D) video and highlights the key developments of 3D video since the nineteenth century. It describes the most common digital 3D video formats currently in use. The chapter also discusses the most common application scenarios for 3D video. It outlines the motivation of the book, and the reintroduction of 3D video in general. Finally, the chapter provides an overview of each of chapters in the book.
