Abstract

As a subset of critical theory, Marxist or radical theory challenges mainstream criminological theory to focus less on the crimes of the powerless and more on the crimes of the powerful. It does so by examining structural and economic inequalities produced by forces associated with capitalism, and argues for policies directed at reducing the social harm that disproportionately affects those groups on the margins of society.
