Abstract

Credentialing is defined first in its broader societal context, then in terms of its primary research locus in the sociology of education. The relative authority of third parties in producing credibility in social relationships of various kinds is critical to credentialing processes. The history of the sociological study of credentialing is traced through major theoretical and empirical contributions to the topic. Potential areas of future research are outlined.
