Abstract

Population as an object of scientific study, public policy, and civil society has a long and contentious history. Demographic methods remain fundamental to a wide range of human sciences and government, yet practitioners remain divided in their views of its scientific status. This history, the several ways in which demography has been defined, and several major controversies are reviewed in this entry, together with principal methodological and substantive developments.
