Contemporary Art
Abstract
There is increasing interest in the confrontation between contemporary art and anthropology. This confrontation has been referred to as the “ethnographic turn” in contemporary art. The past few decades have seen a growing number of contemporary art projects that address questions about the study and theorization of cultural difference and the practice of representation. At the same time, there has been a growing interest in contemporary art among anthropologists to communicate about ethnographic research, which starts from a problematization of the different possible genres, media, and formats. This entry discusses some of the criticisms of the ethnographic turn in art and of the role of the artist as an ethnographer. It elaborates on the sensory turn in ethnography/anthropology and ends by discussing some of the current trends at the intersection between contemporary art and anthropology.
