Abstract

This entry defines counterinsurgency; identifies its basic theory, strategy, and flaws; and outlines its relationship with the discipline of anthropology through two eras—first, the Vietnam War and its aftermath and, second, the contemporary US-led “war on terrorism” following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
