Abstract

Asia is at the forefront of a global epidemic of diabetes. The region is receiving a double hit from a rising prevalence of young-onset diabetes and from an aging population. The burden of diabetes and its complications threatens to overwhelm health care systems in the region, which contains 25% of the world's population. In this chapter, the need for new approaches and for the evolution of health care delivery from a predominant focus on treatment of acute illnesses to management of chronic diseases and health maintenance are discussed, using Hong Kong and China as examples. The problems are discussed as are some possible solutions that can be applied without major increase in public-funding provision. Collaboration, both multidisciplinary and intersectoral, is emphasized.
