This text is a slightly amended version of the Laudatio delivered at the Convocation on 21 May 2003 at the Institute of Social Studies, on the occasion of the award of the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to Edward Said at the Lustrum Ceremony on the 50th Anniversary of the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, The Netherlands. Factual career details provided by Sandra Fahy are gratefully acknowledged.

Professor Edward Said passed away in September 2003; the editors decided to retain the original wording of this laudation, with very minor changes.
