A study on the sulphide capacities of steelmaking slags
Abstract
This report is on the application of a mathematical model for the predictions of sulphide capacities of steelmaking slags. The model was verified earlier on laboratory scale. Predictions agreed well with experimental data. In this work, an attempt was made to calculate sulphide capacities from plant data (chemical analyses of steel and slag). Difficulty was encountered in determining the oxygen activity in the steel melt as well as the activity of alumina in the slag phase when calculating the sulphur distribution ratio. However, good agreement was obtained between predicted and experimentally determined sulphur distribution data, when the activity of oxygen in the metal phase was assumed to be 1×10−4 for the model calculations.
